My Pet Dragon is a Brooklyn based art-rock group formed out of the love shared between founders Todd Michaelsen and wife Reena Shah. The duo has come a long way since the time that Todd dropped out of college to pursue other dreams.

Almost in a fairy tale kind of way, the success of their debut album, “First Born,” has led them to great reviews. My Pet Dragon has had a song played on BBC radio and collaborated with Anoushka Shankar and Karsh Kale. All that attention would later lead them to be signed by the label Gimme That Sound Productions under producer Stephan George. Their story continues with the release of their latest “maxi single” with bonus tracks entitled “Lover in Hiding,” expected to be released on iTunes and CDbaby on April 27th. This will be in preparation for a full-length album expected to be released later this year.
Tracks on the album include, “Between Us,” which showcases a singing style with hints of Thom Yorke’s brand of angst and anguish in the bends of Michaelsen’s voice. The sound remains chill, atmospheric and upbeat. An electronic beat drives the groove, and midway through the song, Michaelsen goes off into vocal moans sounding extremely smooth and melodic before he comes back to the chorus singing, “There is something in between us, that science hasn’t found.”
“New Nation,” the third track on the album, explores more of a folk type of background with a heavy beat on the 2s and 4s. The vocals soar on the track as he optimistically rants about a utopia of a unified new nation. Images of paradise and feelings of strength, unity, and power are provoked.

The last track is a Reprise of “Lover in Hiding” as an accapella choir arrangement. The song shows off the band’s diversity, also hitting those long melodic notes that Michaelsen holds while complimented with similar counterpointed back-up vocals.
The “maxi single’s” primary song “Lover in Hiding” is dreamy, reminding me of moments of The Police’s “Walking on the Moon.” Melodies are catchy, memorable and convincing. Expect to be hearing more of this group on the radio. The song’s lyric reminisces about those awkward, simple and powerful moments with that special someone as if the love was just waiting to be tapped. My Pet Dragon makes you feel like those few moments that you’ve experienced aren’t enough and with a deep sentiment, the song and the band create a powerful yearning for those moments again!

I saw this band at Trash bar on the 9th of April and was mesmorized by Reena's dancing and Todd Michaelson is true talent - the voice of an angel. i cannot wait to see them again!!! |
