Lollapalooza truly is the heartbeat of summer in Chicago. This week Perry Farrell and wife Etty in tow, invaded the Debonair Social Club in Chicago to formally announce the line-up for the 2010 Lollapalooza festival. And even though it was on a Monday, the spirit of the festival made it feel like a weekend.

Outside the night air crackled with electricity as lightning streaked across the sky. The electricity could be felt inside as well as scantily dressed women lined the club that had filled to capacity. It was the anticipation of the moment that drove them.

Like a magician guarding a coveted secret Farrell had waited until midnight to unveil the lineup. For the past month, the Lollapalooza site has been teasing fans with a hangman style game, slowly revealing the names of each of the bands playing. Letter by letter fans waiting on the edge of their seats hoping for a band they loved to show up. Many were left guessing up until the final moments as the lineup flew upon the screen as the clock changed to Midnight in the Debonair Social Club.

Personally, it was well worth the wait. The lineup, a tremendous fusion of old school and pop favorites, has a bit of something for everyone. From Lady Gaga (which is sure to be one of the biggest headliners of the fest) to Chicago’s own Mavis, Staples every genre is covered to perfection.

Looking through the list there are some names that have not been on the scene in a long time. Artists like Erykah Badu and Blues Traveler have become near relics compared to current sensations like MGMT and Wolfmother. A true Lolla fan will find their place in the center of the park and just soak up the fusion of sounds coming from all directions.

Despite the hype, the actual announcement was rather anti-climactic. Although Farrell was at the venue and had spent the night talking to fans and the letting them know he was there he did not actually say anything to mark the occasion. The music got louder; bubbles penetrated the atmosphere and the crowd celebrated in unison at just the right moment. And then it had passed just as quickly as it arrived.

The announcement party was more than just an excuse to hear who would be playing and maybe catch a glimpse of Farrell up close. In the end it was a celebration of the music and those that live for the show. Attending the event made you a part of the process and not simply a spectator. As the night wore on many drifted out into the street still high from the adrenaline of the night. Spring may be just beginning but summer and Lollapalooza would be upon us soon enough.
