1 p.m. Sunday

G.Love is easily in my top three favorite musicians of all time. And, you know what? I can’t figure out why he isn’t at the top of the music world. I don’t know why people haven’t caught on. His music is so captivating and entertaining, yet has somehow avoided mainstream.

Fuckin’ shame I tell ya.

Anyway, I had the chance to interview my bro on Sunday – just the two of us enjoying a little shade away from the blistering sun – and this is what he had to say about fame and about the festival.

Dude, what an honor to play such a great festival, huh?

Absolutely. Obviously they are doing something different with Lollapalooza by having bands like Widespread Panic on it. The festival used to be all alternative bands, but now they are making it a live music festival, which is smart of them. We are a good bridging act between the jam bands and the radio bands. If you did put Widespread Panic on one scale and Weezer on another scale, we are the ones in the middle. It’s great to be able to fit into this festival. These are our fans.

Honestly, I have never quite understood why you aren’t as big as a Weezer.

I don’t know man. I don’t know. We are making good records, but I don’t know why we aren’t like a Weezer. We keep getting better and better at making records. I know it’s taking us a long time to kind of breakout, but we are learning the craft.

But, you guys are a live band – and probably one of the best around.

Thanks man. Thanks. We are just going to try to continue to get better in the studio and become a band like No Doubt and Weezer who can make these great records, yet are incredible live. I would love to be on the same stage.

So, do you think it’s possible to explode with the next album?

I’m really confident about this next album. I feel like The Hustle was the first page of chapter two. I think this next album will be the completion of chapter twp and then we will see where we go from there.

Dude, you are famous. That’s a given – but on a different scale. Perhaps more underground than mainstream. How are you handling the fans, the music and the atmosphere here?

It’s very interesting man. Yeah, I’m just doing press and then taking an hour to chill before the show and then I’m working again.

Nice.

Well, you know, I’ll walk around for a little bit. Why, what were you going to say?

You have to be stopped a bunch man. These are your fans.

Yeah, that’s why I don’t really, um, walk around. I like to walk around and meet my fans and stuff, but things have been getting kind of crazy. I don’t know. I can definitely walk down the street and not get recognized. I can even walk around my show and not get recognized.

Really?

Yeah, man. Swear to God.

You should go stand in the crowd before you go on and just start screaming “G.LOVE ROCKS.”

(Laughs) That would be crazy man. I will be out on a date and someone will be like, ‘Yo, G.Love.’ And I’ll be like, ‘Yo baby, what’s up.’ (Laughs)

Naw. You’re like, ‘Yeah, baby, I have tomorrow night open.’

(Laughs) Exactly. No, but, yeah, it’s cool. It was funny being on tour with Jack (Johnson) in Australia and we would be walking through the airport and everyone would go crazy for him. I am kind of lucky that doesn’t happen to me. Jack handles it great and I like it. The main point of our whole conversation is that our shit is slowly rising and I look forward to seeing where it goes next.

I feel like I have been doing this long enough that I will be able to handle this just fine.

Well, you have one guy in Chicago who will support you.

Thanks dude. That really means a lot.
