Comedy is such a subjective thing. What one person might find hilarious another might not react at all. The first time I saw David Cross was a guest appearance on the TV show Just Shoot Me. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen on television. As the character Donnie, the brother of the photographer of the show, fakes his mentally challenged behavior to abuse his family’s generosity and to hook-up with chicks. From that moment I have been a fan ever since. David Cross who more recently made a big splash as the “never nude” sexually confused wannabe Blue Man on the short lived Fox show Arrest Development, is back on the stage doing stand-up with Bigger and Blackerer and continues to push the envelope now on DVD and CD.

David Cross - Bigger and Blackerer

Special Features

Directed by Lance Bangs
Starring David Cross
Rated UnRated

The show opens with a kid, complete with a plastic bald cap, as little David Cross. His jaw dropping profanity is at first shocking from a ten year old but by the end of it you can’t help laughing your ass off – especially with repeat viewings. After little David Cross walks off the stage the real one finally graces the stage and instantly delivers his own style of comedy we have come to love.

Barely through his first routine, Cross goes after a fake signer that has come to the show on his own dime that hung his own spot light to “sign” his own jokes to the deaf members of the audience. The bit is just another example of Cross trying to push the envelope of PC taste. In the end the signer turns out to be deaf and an anti-Semitic to boot!

Later on in the show Cross lays out his grievances with Whole Foods and their eco-friendly products. In particular one that is entitled – “If You Care” and how it makes you feel guilty if you don’t buy their product. He continues on his rant that the logo should be a disappointed Rabi – “God forbid you spend an extra seventeen cents on the planet.”

Towards the end of the show Cross takes it even a step further to tackle race in the last chapter entitled “Black Stuff.” In New York you can pay an extra fifty dollars for a vanity license plate for causes that give you a pink ribbon for breast cancer or a picture of Martin Luther King for the Freedom Foundation. On the website you can go there and order your proposed plate. So Cross is going to get one that states -NGR LVR with the MLK Freedom Foundation logo with it. He pauses to let it sink in.

Cross is just getting started on race as he asks if the audience notices how sensitive black people are on race. “Yeah okay, some people are black. Some people are luckier!” Just in case you think he may be a racist because you don’t get his jokes, Cross continues with “I lost my virginity to a black prostitute…we still keep in touch.”

David Cross – Bigger and Blackerer isn’t for everyone. Cross has his own unique style of humor that can put off some of the more conservative viewers. But as Cross himself would probably say – Fuck em! Available on both CD and DVD Bigger and Blackerer is hilarious and worth your time as you hope and pray they finally make that Arrested Development movie.

Extras

There are some nice bonus material of bits that didn’t make the final cut. These easily could have been in the show and it’s nice to have them here for us to watch. There is also one more that is entitled “Unnecessary Bonus Bullshit.” This badly shot footage appears to be from the 2004's "It's Not Funny" CD. It includes the gay partners and electric scissors routines. Now just because it’s poorly shot doesn’t mean it’s not worth viewing because they are both quite hilarious and were two of the best bits on that CD. Plus a Easter egg of extra material that includes him trying to drink his mic instead of the beer and talk into the beer instead of the mic. You can find it if you click on his eyes in the main menu.
