The accusations—or rather, the attempts to link Mars' music to a series of murders, suicides, and school shootings—have caused Mars' popularity to skyrocket, thrusting Mars and horrorcore into the mainstream.
“I like it [the controversy],” Mars said. “But people have to realize that horrorcore is just a fantasy. A lot of the times [when I rap], I'm just talking trash or I'm going after what sounds hot. I'm not telling people to go out and shoot up their school.”
But that claim is negated by the Red Lake Senior High School shooting in March 2005, in which one of Mars' fans went on a shooting spree, killing his grandfather, his grandfather's girlfriend, an unarmed security guard, a teacher, and five students.
“Some of the crimes go hand-in-hand with what we talk about in horrorcore, but I blame bullying, poverty, abuse, and bad parenting,” he razed. “I think that our music can save people, because there's a lot of people out there who feel the same way I do.”
And there are. Amidst the sea of faces are people who grew up in environments saturated by violence, poverty, bullying, loneliness, divorce, drugs, abuse, and homelessness. In that sea, you will also find people who just enjoy the shock value of the music itself, or even people who find emotional release in songs about some of the worst acts a human can commit. According to Mars, emotional release and the exploration of the darker self can be vehicles for self-actualization.
Mainstream figures like the Reverend Al Sharpton argue differently. Sharpton feels that horrorcore can bring America's youth closer to violence, and therefore calls for severe punishment to be brought upon all rappers who “preach violence”.
For Mars, violence stops at the tip of his pen. A self-professed opponent of rape, murder and suicide, Mars feels that violence is so deeply rooted in our society that it is practically a value. “We live in a society that deems that some people deserve to die for what they do,” he posed.
And we do. Amidst the lethal injections and electric chairs, school shootings, GLBTQ beatings, abortions, wars, and other acts of violence, there is an undertone of “someone having to die” for a wrongdoing, skin color, creed, political viewpoint, religious emotive, sexual orientation, style of dress, or difference in opinion. The need to die is both literal and figurative: it is rooted in statements like “she should be shot in the face for wearing those shoes,” and it is also rooted in the birth of this country.
For Mars and many other horrorcore artists, issues like these are the root of their genre. “The character I portray in my music is a darker side of myself,” he stated “as an artist, I get to fulfill all the dark sides of myself and humanity in my music. I think that in any era of music, they [artists with violent music] had to go through the same things.”
Mars also feels that his music explores freedom, something that is very dear to him. “Freedom is my biggest mental turn-on, [and] I think the world should do whatever they want,” he said. “I know that because I went out and experienced life, I became a smarter person. If you do whatever you want and don't take the things that are forced at you, you will find what you're looking for.”
Boiled down, Mars is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon. But in another light, he is just a man. And a mouthpiece. To see Mars and other legends of the horrocore genre for yourself check out the Dead4Life Tour coming to the Bottom Lounge on July 30.
