When Katy Perry came out with “I Kissed a Girl” in 2008, I thought she was a complete joke. Then once she came out with “California Gurls” (feat. Snoop Dogg) earlier this year, I gave her more credit for her music. I was never a big fan of Perry, but today after listening to the release of her sophomore album “Teenage Dream,” she may have gained another fan.
Katy Perry

" Teenage Dreams "
(Capitol)
Released August 24, 2010

The first song on the album, “Teenage Dream” is about having the freedom as a teenager and just living life with no regrets. At the same time this song would be deleted instantly if I found it in my teenage sister’s iPod. The lyrics explicitly say, “Lets go all the way tonight, no regrets.” Defiantly not family friendly.

Perry was raised in the church by both her Christian parents. Seems like a case of a good girl gone bad. “Last Friday Night” (T.G.I.F.) is not about Jesus, but getting drunk on a Friday night and doing ridiculous things like dancing on table tops and skinny dipping in the dark. I actually like this song, the lyrics remind me of the movie “The Hangover.” Come on, we have all had our Friday night moments.

Nine years ago, Perry had blonde hair and dressed like she shopped at a garage sale. Now she’s all grown up with dark black hair and did you see the album cover? On the “Katy Hudson” album cover you barely see half of her face but “Teenage Dreams” she’s half-naked laying in clouds.

After “Ur so Gay”, what did you expect? The “Teenage Dream” album is full of partying, girl talk, sex, love, freedom and more sex, especially the song “Peacock.” Sorry people she’s not talking about a bird, but seeing a man’s goods. “Are you brave enough to let me see your Peacock, don’t be a shy kind of guy I bet its beautiful.”

Perry is definitely not afraid to express herself in this album. She is vocally talented and most of the beats are similar to The Black Eyed Peas or Gwen Stefani. Lyrically I find most of her songs like “Circle the Drain” hilarious. “You fall asleep during foreplay cause of pills you take are more your forte, I’m not gonna stay around and watch you circle the drain, watch you circle the drain.”

Not all her songs are about partying, sex and watching a drug addict boyfriend go down the drain. “Pearl” is a more serious song. It’s about a woman that use to have confidence and rule the world but got lost in the world. “There’s a way out, way out you don’t have to be held down.” Surprisingly this song makes more sense than any song on the CD and I found it very motivational almost like Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful.”

“Teenage Dream” seems like it’s more suitable for adults, I’m sure not too many parents would buy this for their teenagers. It’s a pretty good album; I enjoyed 9 out of 12 songs on the album. “E.T.” “Firework” and “The One That Got Away” please go back in the studio Katy and try again.
