If you're looking to capture a bit of Chicago's eclectic, matter o' fact vibe, have yourself a little Poi Dog Pondering at Ravinia on Friday night. Starting at 8 p.m., Poi Dog will be pairing up with JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound to help you start the weekend right and hopefully they'll convince you to dance, dance, dance.
Long-time fans will also be in for some older Poi Dog by way of acoustic jams. Born out of the streets of Honolulu and raised in Austin, TX, Poi Dog's sound began as an ode to folk-based music, but eventually evolved into the eclectic, soulful jams you hear today.
Lumino got the chance to talk to band leader Frank Orrall about the band the show.
How did [the idea of] Poi Dog Pondering come into being?
Ted Cho and I met as street musicians playing on the streets of Honolulu. Then there's Susan Voelz and Max Crawford who we met during our time in Austin. We also picked up musicians when we relocated to Chicago in the 90s.
How has your music style evolved or changed over the years?
We started out very acoustic rock, and have evolved into a more electric, orchestral mini-soul orchestra.
What inspires your music?
Daily life and real people... Also Dylan Thomas. I love reading his stuff out loud. For a while I was really enjoying Kerouac too. I think he just enjoyed the sound of words.
What is your vision for Poi Dog Pondering's future presence on the music scene?
To continue to try and make better and better albums until we save up enough to buy a proper sailboat, at which time we plan to set sail for Brazil, Tahiti and points unknown and ultimately disappear at sea.
In addition to building a presence on YouTube and the local music scene, do you plan on venturing into other promotional medians? If so, which ones?
We heard that one can make a reasonable living in printing logos onto matchbook covers; that is our fall-back plan... gotta have a fall-back plan.
You too can be an inspiration for Frank if you come visit Poi Dog Pondering on Friday night. Dance, sway and be merry.
