Talking Nitty Gritty With "Son of a Bad Man" Print E-mail

New bands come and go but it’s the one’s that truly have a passion for the music that survive. When I got the chance to sit down with Shawn Fischer and his band Son of a Bad Man I could see that spark in his eye. It was still early on Sunday morning and many of the bands coming to play Lollapalooza were just waking up from their post-show party haze.

Son of a Bad Man
Shawn Fisher: Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar
Casey King: Rhythm Guitar, Vocals
Robbie Vanosdol: Lead Guitar, Vocals
Alex "Scraggle" McDonald: Bass, Vocals
Brad Moxey: Drums

Fischer has been playing guitar since he was 14 talking his way into nightclubs and bars all over the country. That experience has given the fresh faced 21 year-old the time and patience to really perfect his craft. Fischer’s booming voice is easily reminiscent of old school Rob Thomas or Chris Cornell.

Lumino got the chance to sit down with the band shortly after their set the final day of Lollapalooza Still full of energy from the show the boys were eager to discuss what it’s like to live in their world.

How was your set?

Amazing!

How about the rain?

We’re all wet, so we all got wet together. It was a good day! We’ll worry about our equipment tomorrow.

Talk to Les Paul and get you some new ones. How did the fans respond?

We were worried about the rain, but people just came out, they were jamming out, got all into it, they just kept coming, and they STAYED, which made my fucking day.

You guys are super talented and I found you promote yourselves very well on your video blogs, how’s that working for you?

We try to connect with our fans as much as possible. Try to connect with people who are really interested in us and what we’re doing as much as humanly possible. That’s all we really care about is the fans. That’s why we’re doing this, for the crowd.

Does that influence your music at all when you’re playing?

Sometimes. We like to throw it out there to get a reaction and sometimes we just do what we want to do.

You started playing music when u were young, what was it like playing places like that?

It was rough because NO ONE would take you seriously. People would see “X” on our hands and they’d be like “oh no! You’ve got X’s on your hands and we’re paying to see you play?” and it was great though. I’d recommend anybody do it because it gave us the backbone to keep playing. If you can put up with that, you can do anything.

Where are you guys touring after Lolla?

Nashville, Mobile, Alabama, then home to Jacksonville and back out til end of September.

Will you hit mainly the East Coast?

Yeah, that’s our main circuit. We hit Nashville and St. Louis, and are working our way west.

Do you guys play with other artists, share bills?

Oh yeah. We try to everywhere we play. It works too because each time we go out we get bigger crowds and play more shows.

Any bands you’d like to see today?

Switchfoot is going on right now, that would’ve been cool, but we’re listening and enjoying it. Definitely Soundgarden tonight. Mumford and Sons.

We saw Greenday last night was mind blowing and watching them last night, then playing this morning…it was incredible. That guy they pulled on stage last night who sang “Longview”, that’s what everyone dreams of! Getting pulled onstage by Billie Joe to sing a Greenday song? It made that guys life!

If one of you guys gets pulled up to sing with Soundgarden tonight, you have to kill it!

That’d be great! Of course! It’d be even better if you got up there and played the spoons! That would be epic!
