The world will never change unless you change it. This Saturday musician Alice Peacock along with rock photographer Paul Natkin will put a dent in the Chicago community with their annual “Rock For Reading” benefit being held in Lincoln Hall.

An Evening with...Alice Peacock : A Rock For Reading Benefit -Plus a Paul Natkin Photography Exhibit

Lincoln Hall
Chicago, IL
September 11, 2010

The Rock For Reading Foundation, started by Peacock and Natkin along with Camping and Education Foundation president Hugh Haller in 2003, aims to promote literacy not just Chicago but everywhere. Inspired by the power of music and songwriting the foundation has been making an impact in Chicago for almost a decade.

Lumino had the chance to talk with Peacock one-on-one to discuss the foundation, the event and what it means to be inspirational.

How did you find Paul Natkin and decide to start the foundation?

I met Paul back in around 98’ or 99’, I was singing audio jingles at the time and we met and Paul is just a wealth of contacts about the music business. I brought him in as my tour manager and he also did the cover for one of my albums. He’s a huge reader and through joint contacts we started the non-profit together. The rest is history.

Are you involved with a lot of charities?

I am a trustee for The Recording Academy and we take part in something called MusiCares. MusiCares provides assistance for musicians that need help financially, medically and personally. We were first on the scene after Katrina.

Tell me more about the event, what can those that attend expect?

Magic. [laughs] I am going to be performing with Danny Myrick my collaborator on a number of projects. And Paul is going to do a retrospective of all of his work. He’s done so much over the years it’s going to be a great show. I am excited; I remember when Lincoln Hall was the 3 Penny Cinema years ago. I haven’t played there yet but I’ve been told it’s great inside.

The event is all about empowering and motivating young people. Who inspired you when you were a child?

My parents read to me all the time. They were big reading role models to me. A lot of the songwriters I admire like Joni Mitchell were readers too. We want to make reading cool and sex it up a bit for kids. We want to inspire and hopefully break them away from the XBOX for a little bit.

The Rock For Reading benefit will be held this Saturday September 11 at Lincoln Hall (2424 N. Fullerton Ave.). For more information visit www.rockforreading.org
