Wrigleyville became the hub of True Blood in Chicago this Labor Day weekend as fans of the famed HBO television show took over John Barleycorn. True Blood, an unconventional show about the love between a human and a vampire in rural Louisiana, has become a cult sensation. When it was announced that RCN was going to be holding a True Blood themed party with a special appearance by Rutina Wesley (who plays the always wonderful Tara on the show) I knew I had to check out the event.

The result was mix if not just disappointing. RCN didn’t really think through the idea of a party for a show with such a large cult following. People take the show very seriously and honestly deserved far better. There was no real attempt to add mood to the venue except for a few red lights. The only real clue you had that it was a vampire party was one, count them, one lonely sad coffin in the corner near the stage. Talk about anti-climactic.

Something tells me that although the night was geared toward vampire lovers the true fanatics weren’t there. Most of those attending seemed like people that are usually at the bars on a Monday night. The fact that there was something going on was more than likely just a coincidence.

With all of this said, the night did liven up considerably once Wesley arrived. The beautiful and talented actress has been on True Blood since the beginning and avid fans all wanted a piece. I will give RCN one thing, the Q&A session was a smart choice. Although giving the microphone to the fans might not have been the smartest idea. Most questions seemed to range from “so….is Anna Paquin really your best friend outside of the show?” to “How do you get your body looking so good?” with a lot of repeats in between. One confident fan even tried to put his arm around Wesley to impress his friends.

Wesley held her own, answering all the questions honestly and truthfully. I have to hand her credit not only is she an amazing actress but she is also a very down to earth woman. When the topic came up of whether or not she will ever let her character be happy again she eloquently stated “I don’t know I think my character has been chosen to show the pain of the program. It gives her a lot of emotional depth and it’s something I love doing.” Wesley pleased fans by giving inside details about life behind the scenes on the show. She considers Paquin (who plays main character Sookie Stackhouse) “her girl” and has a tremendous amount of love for her.

Those lucky enough to be VIP got the chance to talk with her one-on-one although only for a brief moment. Security was very tight and Wesley, while still very warm, seemed to fly through the meet-and-greet session.

Events like this happen quite often I’m told and I am very curious to attend more but I hope they are better executed. A vampire party in the heart of Chicago has so much potential, it is a shame to see it wasted.

Chicago has so many venues tailor-made for this kind of event--Late Bar, Smart Bar, Neo, Exit--and the promoter went with John Barleycorn?! JB is a miserable hangout for post-collegiate douche bags and their toolbox girlfriends. And the staff at JB are tools, as well.
