What’s To Like About The Like Print E-mail

Think back to a time when the Beatles were singing about wanting to hold your hand or about a girl they saw standing there. Now replace the ‘Fab Four’ with four beautiful women instead. When listening to “Release Me” by The Like, you will be transported back to the 60s and 70s era.
The Like

"Release Me"
(Polydor)
Released June 11, 2010

However, The Like ladies pull off this sound with a somewhat modern twist. The Los Angeles band released their first album “Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking?” in 2005. The debut album boasted a poetic, earthy feeling with the occasional electric guitar riff. Songs such as “June Gloom” and “What I say and What I Mean” helped put them on the music radar but unfortunately it was not enough to keep them there.

Five years later and The Like have reemerged from a major musical makeover complete with two new members and a heavily 60s inspired attitude. Currently, The Like consists of: Elizabeth “Z” Berg (vocals/guitar), Tennessee Thomas (Drums), Laena Geronimo (Bass), and Annie Monroe (Organ). Release Me doesn’t hold back and tries to catch your attention within the second track “Fair Game” that is drenched with Monroe’s organ playing and some impressive drumming by Tennessee. “He’s Not a Boy” is very enjoyable and boasts Berg’s sweet airy, breathy voice and the girl’s ear pleasing harmonizing.

“Narcissus (In a Red Dress)” is a cleverly smooth and catchy tune that can easily get stuck in your head. After a while, the tracks start sounding too repetitive and rudimentary and the sugarcoated, bubble gum Happy Days music has you begging to hear death metal.

These ladies are quite talented but lack their own style with this album. Halfway through the album and I had the urge to watch “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me”, simply because Release Me could have been mistaken for the soundtrack. In fact, most songs are soundtrack worthy. This is a band worth keeping an eye on, I’m curious to see what they produce

If you enjoy the poppy, retro fad, then you will like and possibly love The Like. The Like’s second album “Release Me” came out on June and is worth a listen.
