Say What with Flogging Molly Print E-mail

A good interview can really turn me onto a band’s music. Even if I wasn’t a huge fan prior to our chatting, afterward, my opinions can change.

With Flogging Molly, I have always liked them, just not loved them. To say I love them now would be a flat out lie, but to say I respect them more because of their generosity, and more importantly, their sense of humor, would be the honest truth.

Did you know?
• “Within A Mile Of Home,” the band’s new album, has been said to mix the Clash, U2 and David Bowie
• Lead singer Dave King was born in Dubin
• Flogging Molly was formed in 1989
The band is a Chicago favorite. Almost all of my friends have given praise to this band – thus giving me a good reason to interview them – a moment of my life that was pure joy. This band knows how to have fun.
And fun they will have, this Saturday as they jam out at the Vic Theatre for what looks to be heading for a sold out show. Have nothing to do this weekend? Why not join me in listening to this sweet band. Rock on!

Sorry man, I had like 10,000 calls coming in at the same time, so it took a second to answer your call.

(Laughs) That’s alright man.

You are now important and my attention is all toward you. So, where you be right now?

We are in Burmington, New York. We are doing a little tour right now.

How’s the tour going?

It’s going awesome, man. Things are going well.

And you are coming to Chicago this week, you’ve got to be pumped.

Um, we are always excited about coming back to Chicago. It’s one of our favorite cities to come to.

That’s what I like to hear. Now, are you just saying that because your publicist gave you those orders?

(Laughs) No. We truly love Chicago.

So, are you going to go out and party when you get here?

Oh yeah, of course. We have a lot of friends there, so we are going to have to go out and see them.

Chicago has been good to Flogging Molly.

Yes it has. We recorded our first two albums in Chicago, so Chicago has been good to us.

What’s it like playing in the Midwest compared to the coasts?

I think the kids are a little more hungry for the entertainment. They definitely come with their guns playing. They are always high energy shows and the kids go ballistic. Kids in the Midwest definitely get it.

So, you guys probably love playing off of the energy when in the Midwest.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Whenever you get to anyplace in the Midwest, it’s like that. And, Chicago has its own energy that is special. Chicago is probably the most underrated city in America.

The music scene.

Yeah, the music scene and just the people and the city itself. You don’t hear Chicago topping off people’s top cities in America list. But it’s a great city for it’s good reason and bad reasons. A little corruption has never hurt a good story.

(Laughs)

It has all the elements that make a city great. But, for some odd reason, people don’t seem to gravitate towards it.

And you know what, I think Chicago is OK with being a little underrated. I like it that way.

What’s it like backstage with you guys backstage? What’s the party like?

It’s not too hardcore. We like our drink, and, um, we like to just hang out with each other. You know, get the energy flowin’. Just have a couple of beers and get ready to have a good show.

And how are the ladies on the road?

Do a little stretchin’. How are the ladies?

Yeah, how are them beautiful Flogging Molly women?

Everyone in the band is married.

Oh, that sucks.

(Laughs) I don’t think Flogging Molly really attracts the best ladies (laughs). Flogging Molly is not the stud band of the year.

But, you guys do have some attractive females at your show, right?

Um, yeah, but, our crowd is kind of young. We are all getting’ up there. I’m not saying there aren’t some nice looking ladies who come to our show, but…

Careful there.

(Laughs)

That’s the focal point that I am shooting for. I figure I will come to your show, you can pull in all these beautiful women, and then introduce them to me as your best buddy.

(Laughs) I think a single guy will definitely fair well.

Flogging Molly is a band for the single man.

(Laughs) More of the band for the single man who drinks his beer and cries a little.

(Laughs) I was afraid you would say something like that.

This is a band that knows all about its crying and its beer.

That’s what I like to hear. You guys touch everyone.

Exactly. We try to unify the whole scene.

So, you guys throw away this music and decide to become a white rapper, what do you call yourselves?

Geeze, I don’t know. I would most likely try to resurrect the guys from Public Enemy and try to do some collaboration (laughs).

That would be pretty (bleepin’) sweet.

I think the mix of an Irish melody with a hardcore rap group could sound good.

I totally agree. Dude, you are onto something. You are on the brink of millions.

(Laughs)

Forget about coming up with a band name, you can have an ego and come up with your own name. What would yours be?

Oh, my own name? Uh, I’m going to go with MC Squirrel.

(Laughs) Why the squirrel.

Wait, no, DJ Squirrel. Um, it’s a lucky omen.

It sounds like an energy drink.

Only Flogging Molly would be able to tell me how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop.

Well, unfortunately, we can’t disclose it, because the world is never supposed to know.

You are good at playing along. It’s going to make for a great story that will bring millions of people to your show.

(Laughs) I hope it doesn’t bring millions. They would be really disappointed that they couldn’t see the show.

Hey man, what would you rather have, everyone loving you, or no one?

Good point.
