Hollywood Casino thrives in Aurora Print E-mail

Hollywood Casino, off New York Street, opened in the mid-'90s buoyed by the hope that it would stimulate an economic rebirth in Aurora’s historic downtown area. Initially, the gamble was a success. Businesses opened at an impressive rate.

And for a brief, sparkling moment downtown Aurora was alive again. But, in time, the businesses – mostly restaurants – faltered and closed, leaving the city in a similar position as the one it had been in years previously. Hollywood Casino, though, seems blisters the night sky around Aurora. It isn’t hard to find.

ATMOSPHERE

It depends on when you go. If you go on the weekdays or weeknights, there is an overwhelming sense of desperation in Hollywood Casino. With the exception of the sound pouring from the hordes of slot machines, it’s a relatively quiet, somber place. Like a video arcade on the brink of bankruptcy. But go on the weekend and whew! The place is hopping. Women in gowns, men in suits. Money, baby. Money! Slots ringing, changing clanging into cups, people exultant in victory. It’s a whole new vibe and one exciting to be around so long as you know your limits. Oh, and watch how much you drink.

ENTERTAINMENT

Look, it’s a casino – slot machines, poker, roulette, Caribbean stud, three card, Blackjack…Standard casino stock. Go with friends, it heightens the entire experience and brings about a little competitive edge that isn’t really there otherwise. Of course there are musical shows which come through Hollywood…but when was the last time you really, really wanted to see Englebert Humperdink?

SPIRITS

Look, this isn’t Vegas. Drinks will cost you. No flipping the waitress a 50-cent piece and a wink so you can get primed on freebies. Won’t happen. The drinks aren’t too expensive, but they’re relatively watered down, which I thought goes against the casino code. But maybe I am wrong. There are three restaurants in Hollywood Casino – the Epic Buffet (which is exactly what it advertises) Fairbank’s Steakhouse, and Take Two (sandwiches and finger food). None of the food is cheap. Eat before you come.

WHY IT’S UNIQUE

It’s the only place in downtown Aurora that seems to turn a profit.
