Every once in a while a film comes along that is not just a commercial success, but more importantly becomes ingrained into our popular culture. The 1988 film about a self absorbed yuppie that during a crucial deal, not only finds out his estranged father is dead, but also learns he has an institutionalized brother. Rain Man is one of those films that comes along once in a while that you know is destined for Oscar gold. Dustin Hoffman delivers another award winning performance as a highly functional man with autism. Now over two decades later, Rain Man has been re-mastered for the first time for Blu-ray.

Rated R

The 80’s was a period where every film Tom Cruise appeared in was a box office hit. During this era, Cruise always played the brooding youth that through the course of his journey, eventually saw the redemption of his misguided ways. Rain Man is a perfect example of this period. Add a stellar performance by Dustin Hoffman, at his scene stealing best, and you have a film that still holds up today.

I have to admit, I fought watching the film again. However, within ten minutes of viewing you quickly remember why this film won four Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and Supporting Actor. Rain Man is a huge film that will make you laugh all the while grabbing and squeezing at your heart.

Now in high definition, the film has never looked better with some bonus material to boot. With that said, I don’t think there is any new material that wasn’t offer up in the previous standard def release. Still, there are three commentary tracks provided by the director and two by the writers. In retrospect, it would have made more sense to put these together to help with the dead air that appears from time to time in each of these tracks. None the less, the tracks add information in second and third viewings.

There are two documentaries, The Journey of Rain Man and Lifting the Fog: A look into the Mysteries of Autism that provide information into the film and the real life world that the film is based on. Finally we have one deleted scene revolving around Hoffman’s character getting in trouble at a convenience store. A nice well acted sequence but it’s an idea that is told several times better in other parts of the film.

Rain Man is a modern day classic that is given a nice shine of paint on blu-ray. If you’ve seen it or not, do yourself a favor and pick it up on blu-ray and enjoy the award winning film.
