Some Music is Better Off Not Being Made Print E-mail

Why do we encourage bad music, especially bad pop music? Singer/songwriters Greg Gibbs makes me ask this question right off the bat. He is from Chicago via New Mexico and has loyalty to Ohio. WHAT!?. Anyways, He is also the owner Chicago Bagel Authority. Which I hope makes better food than the music he makes.

"The Lights"
(Spiderbutt)
Released January 1, 2011

Please know I’m down with the idea of singer/songwriters as I am a fan of groups like Simon and Garfunkel and other singer/songwriters from that era but this is one time as it tends to happens these days where you sit there and go please, please put down the guitar. So with that said let’s dive right into this album with the song “Most Guitars are Made from Trees.” No, really?! No way! Guitars are made from trees. That’s amazing which makes this song even worse is the electro interlude in the middle of the song makes no sense and you question why it is there. I know more and more music is heading the way of having more of an electronic sound to it and I am perfectly okay with that. But, I’m only ok with it when the album is good and just doesn’t sound like cheap effects to try and make the music more interesting.

Even starting with “Time Capsule” which is the first track off this album “The Lights” which was released earlier this year on his own Spiderbutt Productions which blows my mind cause I don’t think there was a light on in his head when he made this album. “Time Capsule” sends me reeling in pain taking my already dislike of John Mayer and Groups like Owl City and making me want to hurt myself just listening to this music. I will give him credit that the music is polished and sounds rather clean coming out of a home studio. However, I know a lot of bands and groups that use home studios and there music as a much more full sound especially when it comes to their electronics which this just seems to be using the most basic settings on protocols or albeton.

One song after another, it’s bad acoustic guitars with vocal effects on a rather generic voice. I do also understand where he is trying to come from this album but at every turn he misses his target. Some of the songs are almost catchy and compelling such as the title track “The Lights” but that is a high point in many of low points. Most of these lyrics are rather uninteresting and seem like a 10 year old could come up with them. Let’s move onto the song “Ground Loops” (how I fixed a stereo at work) which seems like a typical day for him with, oh no, he got bacon on his shirt which also happens to be the one lyric constantly repeated on this track. And the song goes onto how he fixed the stereo at work. Who would have thought? Well at least the song goes along with the title. The music does get my head to move but that is a sarcastic oh yea type of way.

This album again is not the worst thing I have ever heard. It is well put together and for a home studio sounds pretty good even though it lacks a full sound and the electronic part of the tracks could be more entertaining. You can tell time and effort were put into the making of this album. However in the end, Gibbs should stick to doing what he is good at and making sandwiches not music.

I heard a song by him on WXRT a couple of weeks ago and really liked it!

10 Year Old Lyrics

Sometimes a customer will walk in and order a bagel with lox and chive cheese with capers, toasted, open face, and a latte. When we alert him/her that they're in the wrong place, they are generally indignant and insulting. No matter how many times we tell them, "Hey, we have a sandwich with smoked cheddar cheese melted over red onions, BBQ sauce and chicken salad", (the best chicken salad in the world) they remain steadfast in their disappointment. They brought their expectations and assumptions in with them and were too stubborn or proud to acquiesce when they realized they weren't where they thought were. Rather that make an attempt to appreciate an experience that was truly unique, they compared it unfavorably to what they had their heart set on. The Donkey Punch rivals any sandwich in the world, as do many more - but if you have your heart set on something else, you never really tied it.

To the point: Musical taste aside (you obviously didn't care for the ironic instrumentation), you missed a bunch of secular anthems and existential forays. Maybe you thought they were love songs. I realize it's difficult in the age of disposable music to really devoting empathetic consideration to everything that comes across your ears. Considering you're making a hobby of writing about music, the least you could do is actually listen to the words. After that, you're free to dismiss them as 10 year old lyrics. It will make you look dense though.

Also, John Mayer? Really?
