Often people are drawn to an artist’s vocals, lyrics, fashion or vivid videos and forget about the ones playing the drums, bass, piano, saxophone or guitar. After listening to Carlos Santana’s “Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics Of All Time,” the appreciation of the Guitar is given more respect.

This album allows you to go beyond the lyrics and channel into the instruments and hear every musical stroke, key or string. Santana teamed up with Record Producer/Music Executive, Clive Davis who has also worked with the talented Iggy Pop and Earth, Wind & Fire and many other great artists.
Santana and Davis revamped 12 amazing guitar hits originally from other legendary guitarists/bands from the 60’s - 90’s such as The Rolling Stones, Cream, T.Rex, Van Halen, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix just to name a few and added new voices and faces.
India Arie’s beautiful vocals and Yo-Yo Ma on the cello gave George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” an R&B melody incorporated with light piano and guitar tunes. This was one of my favorite songs on the album. It’s calmer and slower than the other songs. Arie has an amazing voice and sings about her guitar weeping and still playing while the world is full of troubles. “I look at the world and I notice it's turning/
While my guitar gently weeps” This song sounds exactly like the original by Harrison except it has more emotion.
Santana gives a funky rock beat while rapper Nas spits out his Brooklyn lyrics to AC/DC’s “Back In Black”. Throughout the song Robyn Troup sings “Cause I’m back, cause I’m back, Yes I’m back, back in Black” The song is about making a come back and wearing all black, which is a color that makes one seem tough and fearless. This was a good collaboration song since Nas has been invisible in the music industry. After this one song, will Nas come back?
The majority of the other songs feature artists from alternative-rock bands such as Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington singing (The Doors)“Riders on the storm, there’s a killer on the run” while Santana rocks the guitar. Chris Cornell of Soudgarden, gives a kick ass performance in Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” He screams “Woman you need a whole lotta love,” while Santana plays the guitar. With this song you can’t help but to dance and swing your hair around. Hopefully the neighbors won’t knock on my door because this song deserves extreme volume.
I really never listened to Santana’s music before, perhaps because I thought most of his music had a Latino/salsa sound. “Guitar Heaven” has a totally different spin, it has a more of a rock n’ roll, R&B, hip-hop fused with country type of sound. Throughout every song you can hear the light or heavy tunes of Santana rocking the guitar and what makes the album more enjoyable to listen to is the talented artists that are featured on each song.
The album cover itself lets you know this CD is full of energy and good songs. In the album cover Santana is leaning back as he hugs the guitar it appears as if musical notes or energy is coming from the guitar. Hands down this was a very creative and great collaboration CD.

jazman Written by Guest on 2011-04-18 07:21:03 Yes, I concur that the album reflects Carlos' spiritual, universal, emotionally charged guitar. His sound is so distinctive, you know it after he bends just a single note! I'm sorry that you haven't listened to Carlos before. His magical and mystical sound has rocked and embraced our planet for more than 40 years. |
