The steamy hot polo fields of Coachella were jammed with VIPs, people paying money to be VIPs, wannabee VIPs, and fun fest goers just looking for good times. It's so L.A., even in the desert.

Here's what the first day entailed...

Cee Lo Green, best known for his hit song "Crazy" did exactly that Friday on stage. As his final song he began a cover of Journey's “Don't stop believing,” just then the sound cut out and audience finished it as he tromped off stage in a huff. His band kept playing, but was soon told to cut their performance. It’s interesting that the band handled the situation in a more professional manner than Cee Lo, so much for professionalism.

Miss Lauryn Hill's warm up music was a precursor for her H.O.T. performance, consisting of Run DMC's Walk this Way/House of Pain's jump around/it takes 2 /I wanna rock right now smooth funk mix. Her final song “Do Wop (That Thing)” sealed the deal that Miss Lauryn Hill is the queen of soul funk rap.

Interpol's melodic dark Indie vibe was kicked up with LCD screens and moody lighting. “How Are Things on the West Coast” tent poled the great set. This band’s brand of post-electro tunes were well executed and if there had been more room in the jammed pit, dancing would've been more of an option.

The Black Keys attracted stars and a huge audience. They ripped the festival wide open with their third song "Your Touch". Their simple, solid, blues rock was greeted with a rocking good time from the crowd. Vocalist Dan Auerbach half joked “I'm so glad we didn't have to play in the sun today.” He also announced it was drummer Patrick Carney's birthday, so the crowd sang for him. They responded with an extended amped up version of "I Need Your Love." Their music soothes and heals the soul. 'I got mine' was the last grinding, booty blazing song.

Kings of Leon played a well oiled set. Mutterings of them not being a Coachella headliners were put on mute as they brought home a great performance. Nice long extending bridge outro for the second song “Crawl” which jammed up the crowd. They played new hits like “Radioactive” like a fine tuned machine. Unfortunately, they had to play their mega hits like "Sex is on Fire", but fortunately it was back to back with "Use Somebody" which balanced out their clichéd set and allowed the perfect amount of time for a bathroom break.. This band has certainly has grown throughout the years and has a knack for writing catchy tune. Kaleb's vocals were strong and fierce. Their rock songs tend to be percussion heavy with thick bass lines designed for a 30 something generation lost.

All and all the first day of Coachella started out with moments of bang for your buck.
