Lollaplooza Celebrates Twenty Years with Epic Lineup Print E-mail

Has it really been 20 years already? It is hard to believe that what started out as a passion project for the lead singer of Jane’s Addiction and founder of the festival Perry Farrell has turned into one of the nation’s largest summer festivals. Bringing in millions of people from all over the world Lollapalooza is a showcase for the top names in music young and old.

Earlier this week Farrell officially announced the lineup for this year’s festival and set the music community ablaze with his choices. Having been to Lollapalooza the last four years I must admit his choice of headliners is genius. Big names like Eminem and Muse contrast well with Coldplay and Foo Fighters, there is something for everyone.

I have to admit though I’m a little surprised at the lack of variety in the smaller bands chosen this year. Looking through the list there is a lot of repetition from previous years. They are all great bands but those that have attended the festival before will have seen Cage the Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, Crystal Castles and The Delta Spirit before. There should be at least a gap of a couple of years before the same bands play again in the same place. Granted, Cage the Elephant was still very new when they graced the stage at Lollapalooza two years ago and they have grown a lot as a band. But with so many bands out there to choose from why go for the old reliable choices?

Farrell must have known he was onto a good thing when he booked Devo last year because his choice to have The Cars play is a great one. The band, a token of 80s pop culture, has not produced an album since the first Lollapalooza and their reemergence on the scene should be celebrated.

I am looking forward to Perry’s Stage with electronic revolutionaries like Girl Talk, Afrojack and Kid Cudi catering to those looking for a change of pace. The past few years Perry’s Stage has felt like an all day rave that you can pop in and out of between sets. It’s a fantastic idea and a great way to relax.

Lollapalooza will be the place to be this August. Whether you are a hardcore metal fan or want to trip the light fantastic with Jay Electronica there is something for everyone every day of the festival. I’ll see you there.
