It’s always the first song on an album that gets the critics and fans excited and anticipating the whole album, it’s that first song that people tend to make their first impression. Dan Tedesco’s first song, “Burn the Barn Down” is a song deeply rooted in soul and rock. It makes you feel like you’re swaying at a concert, or listening to a classic ballad. I’m not one for slower songs, especially to start off an album, but he managed to sway me literally, the song is just great, a great song to take the lead- it’s filled with guitar solos that just melt you, and with Tedesco’s voice, you feel so relaxed and chilled.

Tedesco is a Chicago-based musician and his music is something else, it just touches the soul. His music is something like a math equation; classic rock plus a tinge of country plus soulful indie equals Dan. His voice is very smooth and easy to listen, along with the strong guitar solos and drums keeping the tempo with the random harmonica thrown in there. His new album “Tracks on Fire” is his second album and it doesn’t disappoint.
The second song, “How Good it Feels,” is an all-time classic good song. I can’t help but smile and think of good times in the past and reminisce. If a song could be your best friend, this song could make that happen. “Lookin’ For a Girl Like You” has a harmonica opening up and it’s followed by light guitar playing, and Tedesco’s happy and easy voice. It’s my favourite song out of the whole album, just because it’s so light and cheery, makes you think of summer and care free summer loving.
What I love about Tedesco’s music is how friendly it is, and that its music that many people can relate to and appreciate. And it’s not just one strict genre, it collaborates with a few and sounds, well, beautiful! I also love that this album is great for any mood that you’re in; whether you’re in a cheery, chilled, or in a cranky mood, this album is perfect. It is a perfect album to start off the spring and summer of 2011 with.
Continuing on with the songs, let’s skip on to the self-titled song of the album “Tracks on Fire.” It’s a serious song with meaning to it. Another song with a soulful sound to it; a good steady beat courtesy to the drums, and Tedesco’s voice could bring tears to my eyes in all honesty! The passion and soul that is poured into this track just really gets to you and rocks you and stirs you. At one point it’s just Tedesco and a piano playing the same few notes over and over again and it just gives you chills and makes you fall in love with him and his music all over again.
“Years Ago” has a very familiar tune to it, and yet it’s all Tedesco’s talent that is poured into this song. It’s a song about the past, and the country guitar parts in it add to the sadness of growing up and bring out the emotion that is ever present. Whiskey Roads is the final song on the album, and it has the same sort of tune and similarity as the classic song Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright. It’s a sadder song, but a good way to conclude the album. I had assumed that since he had started off with a slower song, he’d end everything with a peppier song, so I was a little surprised, but it fits his type of music and how he is as a musician and it really is a pretty yet raw song that hits you.
Tedesco’s new album is such a friendly, welcoming collection of new and fresh songs that I really don’t think anyone couldn’t not like it. What’s really great about him is his collaboration of genres, which makes it easy for people to love and relate to. Songs such as “Lookin’ For a Girl Like You” and “How Good it Feels” will most definitely be on my summer playlist this year, I insist everyone to give Tedesco’s music a listen, you won’t be disappointed. He’s fresh, fun, and pure talent.
