Foo Fighters New Album Not A Waste Print E-mail

Who could have known how underutilized Dave Grohl was hiding behind the drum kit, bashing the hell out of the skins in Nirvana. When Foo Fighters debut their self titled album in 1995, who knew this would be one of the most successful alternative bands in the last decade. Now with their seventh studios album “Wasting Light,” not including “Skin and Bones,” the band has delivered arguably their best album to date.
Foo Fighters

"Wasting Light"
(RCA)
Released April 12, 2011

“Wasting Light” was recorded in singer Dave Grohl’s garage and is even a bit of a Nirvana reunion, with Butch Vig producing (who was also the producer of Nirvana’s landmark album “Nevermind”) and Krist Novoselic (the former Nirvana bassist) handling bass and accordion duties on the track, “I Should Have Known.” On top of that, guitarist Pat Smear makes a return as a full-time member after being part of the touring band since 2006.

The album is truly a classic, showing a more aggressive style similar to “One By One” and the most memorable album since “The Colour and the Shape. Almost every song rocks pretty hard but still showcases their melodic signature style. There are many “All My Life” and “Monkey Wrench” type songs on the album making it a very enjoyable album to listen to in full. The band is definitely firing on all cylinders with the sound of this record.

The main focus of the album seems to be a classic hard alternative style similar to bands like Audioslave or Grohl’s own Them Crooked Vultures. The band and the music is great and Grohl’s vocals are, as always, excellent. There are a few standouts tracks such as “Bridge Burning” which has Dave Grohl screaming “These are my famous last words!” before the song really starts. “White Limo” is a frantic hard rock song which is definitely the most unique from previous Foo Fighters tunes. The music video is also quite funny featuring Lemmy of Motorhead driving a white limo and kidnapping the band members before driving off a cliff. And lastly, “I Should Have Known” which is a slower song which sort of reminded me of Nirvana. Former Husker Du and Sugar frontman Bob Mould also plays guitar and sings backing vocals on “Dear Rosemary.”

The record in general is a great hard rocking record and sets the band up well for the future. The last few releases the band seemed to slightly stumble, from 2007’s “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” was quite good but not great. 2005’s In Your Honor was decent but also not great. “Wasting Light” is definitely one of the best albums so far of 2011. If the new album isn’t enough Foo for you, the Deluxe edition features five extra tracks, a remix of “Rope”, a new song “Better Off”, the music video of “White Limo”, a live video performance of “Walk” and the music video of “Rope”.
