Summer Fun with Fast Five Print E-mail

I'm sorry to say but whatever the case, adding Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to one of the most testosterone-filled movie series of the past decade will do nothing but improve it and bring all the more cash to the box-office. And that is exactly what happened with Fast Five, the fifth film no less, in the Fast and the Furious film series. This second midquel is now between 2009's Fast & Furious and 2006's The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

“Fast Five”

Rated: PG-13
Released: April 29, 2011
Directed by: Justin Lin
Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Tego Calderon, and Don Omar

This time around Dom Torreto (Vin Diesel), Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker), and Mia Torreto (Jordana Brewster) are on the run after Brian and Mia free Dom from prison. This dangerous assault brings Dom, Brian, and Mia to the top of the hit-list, which leads to them high-tailing it to Rio De Janeiro.Which leads us to Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), the top U.S. D.S.S. Agent whose super-charged team is assigned to Dom, Brian, and Mia. Hobbs is the most relentless and determined agent in the business and will stop at nothing to get his target.

This of course is the center focus for what appears after, which is of course fast action and furious thrills. Fast Five is easily the best film in the entire series, and is so, for quite a few reasons.

One of the best things about it? Setting. Set of course in the beautiful and lush Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The setting offers the film a new accent to the series. From Tokyo to L.A. to Mexico, the Fast and the Furious series has not been afraid to cross borders and the crew entering Rio is a treat for the audience to witness the beautiful environment. The tone that Rio sets off for the movie is perfect. Warm, inviting, and full of fun, in fact it really resonates with us that this movie was made to purely have a blast with.. I can even recall that in the trailer they state Summer Begins... April 29th, which is definitely the case here.

The actors are once again bringing their all to the film and the chase sequences are so raw. Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson's big fight scene is like an epic battle between a lion and a crocodile fighting over the title of most powerful creature in the jungle (or in this case Rio). In fact this scene contains one of the most surreal and emotional scenes in the film itself.

Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris return from 2 Fast 2 Furious the sequel to the original The Fast and the Furious, to provide the audience with comedic pauses between the action and flash. Although they do provide us with cheesy one-liners and a few jokes that a child could invent, I did find them entertaining and funny, especially, as we usually see Gibson serious (next we'll be seeing him all apocalyptic-woesome in the third and hopefully better, Transformers: Dark of the Moon) or Ludacris dishing out his rhymes.

Not only is Fast Five the funnest in the series but it's the most inventive as well. The film really just follows the story of the main cast of characters aiming to steal a target of 100 million dollars which can hopefully lead to them buying their freedom and coming back to reality.

While all of this is happening Luke Hobbs (Johnson) is garnering clue after clue to catch these runaways. This mediocre plot would've been another boring movie with no plot (like Johnson's last film, Faster). One of the most eye-popping car-chase sequences ever created, as two cars haul a 10 tonne vault through Rio beating down the entire police force. This scene was very creative and fun to watch as the two cars pulled the vault with two cable wires, allowing the vault to skid into buildings and cars. Now it may not be the ultimate car chase, unlike the memorable chase scene in Bullitt, but I do believe it is one of the funnest scenes in the film.

All in all, Fast Five is a great jump start to what seems to be the biggest summer of movies and box office income. The movie may not reach to the emotional viewers that like to chew on characters and plot, but it's able to showcase the incredible. To snap a picture of life behind legality. The Fast and the Furious series has always been there to wet our appetites with fast cars, pretty women, and lots of action, Fast Five is no exception. Fast Five is truly the first summer smash of the the year.
