I Am Number Four is based on the young adult science fiction novel of the same name. John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) has been running since he was old enough to remember. Of course John Smith isn’t his real name, it’s just one of many he’s had since he arrived on the planet Earth. He is accompanied by his guardian and protector Henri (Timothy Olyphant). Their flee was necessary after an evil dominating race, known as the Mogadorians, invaded their planet Lorien. John was one of nine children that were sent to survive on Earth. Henri soon realizes they have super powers from the Earth’s atmosphere. Think Superman but add in a super powerful energy that can be emitted through their hands.
With the Modadorians hunting down the nine children one by one, it is up to Henri to help John stay one step ahead of them and keep him safe. John is Number Four and Loriens (for some reason not explained) can only be killed in sequence. With the first three dead, John is next on the list. Arriving in Paradise, well a city called that in Ohio, things appear to be normal for the first time. John quickly befriends Sam Goode (Callan McAuliffe), he stumbles upon a dog named Bernie Kosar and he suddenly finds himself with a girlfriend Sarah Hart (Dianna Agron). Of course the fantasy quickly dissipates when he finds it difficult to control his powers and the Modadorians arrive to claim their next victim.
I am Number Four is a film geared towards the young adult but equally entertaining for the youth in you. If you can get pass some of the holes in the plot you’ll have a blast by this well acted and entertaining film.
Extras
As has been the trend, the film comes to the home market in a three-pack with a Blu-ray, DVD and a digital copy. I always appreciate a digital copy of the film, however, a DVD version is starting to be a moot point in my opinion. Regardless, you have it all here.
There is also about twenty minutes of deleted scenes that is a Blu-ray exclusive. Plus a blooper reel and a twelve minute featurette on actress Teresa Palmer called “Becoming Number Six” which pretty much sums it up.
Kind of shocking there’s not a over-all documentary on the making of the film or a commentary track to fill in the blanks. For a film that could be the first in a series, it lacks the bonus features to keep you interested and excited for future films.
