Rocky in Digibook Blu-ray Lacks Bonus Material Print E-mail

From the opening music, the classic score immediately brings you into the world of Rocky Balboa. Many of us grew up with these films and the first one has once again been re-released on blu-ray now in the digibook format. The film was a game changer for struggling actor Sylvester Stallone, who not only stared in the film, but wrote it as well. The sleeper hit of 1976 became the highest grossing hit of that year and won three Oscars including Best Picture. The film spawned five sequels but it’s hard to compete with the grittiness of the original.

Rocky (Digibook)

Special Features

Directed by John G. Avildsen
Written by Sylvester Stallone
Starring Sylvester Stallone, Burgess Meredith, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers
Rated PG

It’s been so long that many people might have forgotten the story of the original. Small time boxer and part-time muscle for loan shark Anthony Gazzo (Joe Spinell), Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is struggling to find his way on the streets of Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. While trying to be taken serious as a boxer, Rocky also finds time to court a local shop worker Adrian (Talia Shire). What Rocky may lack in brains he excels in the heart.

When the opponent against undefeated heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) is injured, they scramble to find a replacement for the New Year's Day bout. Rocky finds his big break when Apollo likes Rocky’s nickname "The Italian Stallion." The thought of giving the underdog a shot at the title is not only smart but good entertainment.

The story of Rocky may be one of the best underdog sports tales ever made. Stallone proved worthy to play his character of his own creation. This first film and many of the sequels have held up over the years. If you haven’t seen these films in a while, this version in the digi-book is the way to go.

Extras

The digibook format is a very nice way to present some of the classic movies of our times. The packaging is very sharp and clean. Through twenty-five pages in pictures and words, we are giving a background on the making of the film along with several mini biographies with the actors and the director. There is also a break down analysis on the final fight. It’s a great way to explore the film and learn about the making of a modern day classic.

With all that said, it’s very disappointing that there is zero bonus material on the actual blu-ray. There is absolutely none unless you count the trailers. Where is all the great bonus material that appeared on the 2006 Two-Disc standard disc set? That included a three part making of the film, several featurettes and two commentary tracks one with Stallone himself and another with the director and other cast members.
