When we think of some of the most successful directors in American history most people may think of the more contemporary ones like Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. However, neither holds a candle to the legendary Billy Wilder. His Hollywood career began in 1931 and included such classics as Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, Sunset Boulevard, The Apartment and Stalag 17 to name just a few. He was also responsible for the two movies that helped to put Marilyn Monroe on the map, The Seven Year Itch and Some Like it Hot. The later he co-wrote also staring Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon and was listed the greatest American comedy film of all time by the American Film Institute in 2000. The film can now be seen looking like new on Blu-ray.

Some Like It Hot

Special Features

Directed by Billy Wilder
Story by Robert Thoeren and Michael Logan by screenplay by Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond
Starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, George Raft, Joe E. Brown, Pat O'Brien
Rated PG

Two musicians trying to make ends meet, keep finding themselves at the wrong place at the wrong time. When they stop by a garage to pick up a friend’s car to drive themselves to a gig. They become witnesses to a mob hit and barely escape with their lives. On the run and desperate to disappear, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) join an all-girl musical band headed to Florida. Of course not as themselves, but dressed in drag as female versions known as Josephine and Daphne. On the way the two bide for the attention of the voluptuous "Sugar Kane" (Marilyn Monroe), the vocalist and trouble maker of the group.

Once in Florida, Joe (Tony Curtis) quickly wins in his wooing as he adds a new identity as millionaire "Junior", the heir to Shell Oil (whom appears to have a suspicious sounding voice ala Cary Grant). In the meantime, Jerry (Jack Lemmon) is fighting off a genuine millionaire, Osgood Fielding III (Joe E. Brown), whom has fallen for his alter ego Daphne. Jerry takes one for the team and allows Joe to continue his pursuit of Sugar Kane’s heart.

Little do they know fun and games are soon to be over, as the mob arrives at their hotel by happenstance for a meeting of the bosses. Can they live happily ever after and will they live past the night for that matter? Some Like It Hot is a great example of the screwball comedy that director Billy Wilder did so well. Everyone is in the prime of their careers with a wonderful script to boot.

Extras

Many of the extras are back from the Collector’s Edition DVD and nice to see them included in this edition. There’s a commentary track with Paul Diamond (son of co-writer I. A. L. Diamond) and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel. Also added in, is archival interviews with stars Cutis and Lemmon. There are documentaries including "The Making of Some Like It Hot" and "The Legacy of Some Like It Hot". "Nostalgic Look Back" is a feature with Leonard Maltin interviewing the late Tony Curtis. "Memories from the Sweet Sues" is a featurette that includes interviews of some of the girls from the all girls band in the film. The “Virtual Hall of Memoriess” is mostly a collection of stills and rounding out the extras is a theatrical trailer.
