Phoenix Comics inspires ex-collector Print E-mail

I had no idea what to expect as I entered Phoenix Comics. But as I left, I realized any expectations would have been met and far exceeded.

Phoenix Comics
920 Dempster St.
Morton Grove, IL

See, I was as avid of a comic book collector in junior high and into high school. At least I was into comics as much as my limited income would allow. I primarily collected X-Men titles and basically followed Jim Lee around (WildCATs, etc.), and occasionally picked up some innovative Image Comics titles.

I’m not sure what happened, or exactly when it happened, but for some reason, I stopped collecting. I’ve religiously gone to see both X-Men films on opening night (and been quite satisfied), and I was excited to know some background information on the Spider-Man films, as well as Hellboy. Despite all of these things, I haven’t quite been inspired enough to get back into collecting as of yet, but that may all change soon.

At Phoenix Comics, the books were about to bust through the shelves they were on. Some were stacked on others, and shelving was too close to allow two people to pass each other comfortably (I tried). But this is all part of the great experience that is Phoenix Comics. Despite the "clutter," there was organization, and the owner was more than helpful. He obviously had a goal of providing as much as possible in his limited space.

You’ll have to visit the store to see for yourself, but I’m pretty sure if it was enough to make me giddy, sitting on the floor perusing the vast amount of X titles, wishing I still collected, It’ll be enough for everyone. I know I'll make the trek back in the near future to pick up some nostalgia.

I'd make the trip to the store if I knew when they were open.

:x This is the worst comic book store that I have ever seen. The owner is not very friendly. He will not even greet you with a hello. All his comics are badly damaged because of the way he organizes his shop. He even has comics spread out onto the floor where people occasionally step on them, which does not seem to bother the owner. If you like badly damaged comics, this is the store for you!
