This week Rothbury. Mich. will be the site of the newly developed Electric Forest festival, formerly the Rothbury Festival. The four day event includes artists such as Galactic, Stephen Marley, Tiesto and The String Cheese Incident, to name only a few.
While festival-goers will undoubtedly arrive for the headliners they will also be welcome to a variety of attractions other shows don’t offer. The Sherwood Forest, located next to the festival, is a place for concert goers to relax and clear their heads during the day and a place to enjoy surprise performances, light displays and parties at night.
The Gold Rush Water Park, part if the nearby Double JJ Resort, is a 60, 000 square foot permanent water park where concert-goers can cool down and take refuge from the heat after a day of shows. Tickets for the water park can be purchased on-site. The resort also offers horseback riding and a variety of golf courses for travelers to check out in-between shows.
The main attraction will of course be the star-studded lineup of jam bands and electric music musicians gracing the stage throughout the festival. The concept of getting in touch with mother nature while grooving to good music is not a new one but one has to admire the approach this festival is taking. Newly branded and with a much clearer focus in mind I am curious to see how the first year of the event works out.
For a good mix of styles Lumino recommends Chicago natives Van Ghost playing the Forest Stage followed by what is sure to be a psychedelic two sets by the String Cheese Incident and nightclub legend Tiesto Friday night.
Saturday’s recommendations include an eclectic lineup by REO Speedwagon (by far the oldest band playing but well worth seeing), Future Rock and a late night set by Cirque du Womp’s Ultraviolet Experience which is sure to blow both your eardrums and your mind.
The event quiets down quite a bit by Sunday but there are still plenty of major headliners to be seen. Make sure to catch an early show by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes before rushing over to Beats Antique. String Cheese Incident plays two sets all three nights so if you miss one don’t worry too much about it. As an avid festival-goer it might be best to pop in and out of that show throughout the event to soak up as much of the other acts as possible.
Stay tuned to Lumino Magazine for full coverage of the Electric Forest festival as it happens.
