A Tragic Star: Amy Winehouse Found Dead Print E-mail

British singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her north London apartment on Saturday, according to confirmed police reports. The Grammy-award soul singer had recently been released from rehab and was keeping out of the public eye after pulling out of her European tour after a disastrous performance in Serbia on June 18.

Amy Winehouse

1983 - 2011

Just a few summers ago Winehouse was the talk of the music community with neo-soul hits like “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good” off of her definitive “Back to Black” album. The album tore up the charts but in the U.S. and overseas paving the way for a new line of British soul singers like Adele and Duffy.

While she continued to tour Winehouse hadn’t released an album since 2006 as her problems with alcohol and drugs became more prevalent in the media. A series of legal and health issues further complicated her career keeping her out of the spotlight.

Throughout her career she had been known to openly talk about such issues as depression, anger and addiction. Indeed she was once quoted as saying “I'm of the school of thought where, if you can't sort something out for yourself, no one can help you. Rehab is great for some people but not others.”

In her death Winehouse has now joined the exclusive and tragic 27 Club. The club is used to describe a group of influential musicians that all have one thing in common, they each died at the age 27. Winehouse now joins the ranks of Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Brian Jones and Jim Morrison. A prestigious honor no doubt, but one that came at a high cost.

An autopsy is being performed today to determine the cause of how someone so young can die alone in their bed. Although sudden, it wasn’t a big surprise either. When it’s all said and done, it’s just a sad waste of a talent that should have flourished for years to come.
