Lollapalooza Day One: Muse Creates Magic Print E-mail

Going to Lollapalooza can be a tricky business sometimes. The festival is famous for pairing amazing acts up against each other making fans sacrifice one band for another. And then sometimes it’s not even a choice. With an electrifying stage presence and an intense catalog of hits Muse will blow Coldplay, playing the opposite end of the festival at the same time, completely away every time.

Muse

Lollapalooza – Grant Park
Chicago, IL
August 5, 2011

Kicking off with “Uprising” the band tore into song after song to an audience ready for action. With their big name hits out of the way the band delved deeper into their catalog playing a variety of B-sides and lesser-known favorites.

Few bands can pull off playing hardcore alternative rock before seamlessly transitioning into a piano ballad and switching back to hard rock just easily. After almost a decade in the business, the band is seasoned professionals and know how to move an audience with their live sets.

With thrilling visuals the band took control and never let go the whole night. This is a band who, given the right circumstances, could have easily led the entire audience into a riot. Their combination of smart and crazy is dangerous for any band but Muse harnesses it well.

Few bands have the musical power that should close out the night of a festival. This marks the second time in five years that the band has headlined Lolapalooza and I would not be surprised if they were asked to do so again. Perry Farrell made the right choice with Muse and I hope to see them back at the festival again.

So glad to see someone finally write about Muse at Lolapalooza. I wish I could have been there. I love Coldplay too but there would have been no contest for me. I have seen Muse four times in the last two years and in my opinion, they absolutely rule!
