When I first heard Bright Eyes was playing the large stage at Lollapalooza my curiosity was piqued. Though talented the band’s music doesn’t really lend itself to a large-scale show. It turns out I was wrong, very wrong.

Front man Conor Oberst brought with him a full band that included not one but two drummers. The result was an epic step-up from his rather quiet persona. Instead he belted out song after song of guitar heavy and indeed sometimes even trippy music that made the people move while still managing to tug on their heartstrings.
Oberst is a modern day poet with a romantic but angry soul. While not strictly emo I get the impression he is always depressed no matter how much fame he receives.
The audience was a strange mix of teenagers and men that looked as if they were dragged to the show by their significant other. Bright Eyes is that unique artist where even if you know he words to his songs they are not really something you sing-a-long with. Filled with passion and emotion Bright Eyes songs are meant to be felt individually not so much as a group.
To his credit Oberst not once played his signature “First Day of My Life” much to the disappointment of the thousands of fans that had shown up for the set. Doing so gave him a chance for fans to see the many sides of his artistic spectrum. By the time his set ended a melancholy buzz had set over the south end of the festival grounds. Coldplay would grace the same stage in a matter of hours, the perfect meal to the appetizer that was Bright Eyes.
