Lollapalooza Day Three: The Cool Kids Need to Go Back to School

When I wandered into Perry’s Stage on Sunday afternoon to see The Cool Kids I was curious to find out if the hype I’d been hearing about the Chicago rap duo held true. The result was more than a little mixed.

While Perry’s was the perfect spot to showcase the talent of Antoine “Sir Michael Rocks” Reed and Evan “Chuck Inglish” Ingersoll their music still needed a lot of work. Both Reed and Evans have the potential to be great rappers but they need to work on their presentation and sound quality when doing live performances.

Though I’ve been told that the duo takes a lot from 80s hip-hop I just didn’t hear it in their performance. Much of their show reminded me of a modern day rap show I’d see in just about any club in Chicago. While they have a talent for lyrics there is nothing particularly innovative about their show. Given that there is something like 120 bands at Lollapalooza it is no surprise that a few would slip through the cracks.

The audience at Lollapalooza seemed to be eating them up but most of them were in their teens so the fact that they were there at all was probably a bit of a rush. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not completely tearing down The Cool Kids at all. With a little more stage presence and a few more songs that push the envelope they could easily tear the roof off of next year’s Lollapalooza.

In the meantime though I think it is time for The Cool Kids to go back to school for a little while and try a new approach.
