Lumino got the chance to sit down with the electronic musical powerhouses to talk about the duo's tour with Deadmau5 and what it's like to really move someone with house music.
Most people associate the name Tommy Lee with the 80s metal sensation Motley Crue. As one of the founding members Lee is one of rock n’ roll's most iconic figures. As it turns out, he’s also a closet house music fan.
“Between the technology and seeing people at the clubs lose their fucking minds listening to the music I was hooked. To me there is something so romantic about watching someone just lose it at a show over the music being played,” explains Lee adamantly.
“In a technical sense I’ve been fucking around with machines forever. I’m just fascinated by what is possible and by that I mean everything is possible now,” he says with a childlike sense of giddy.
Aero first met Lee when they collaborated on the rock/electronic/rap musical act Methods of Mayhem in 2000 and have been working together ever since. Aero’s background in West Coast hip-hop and a love of early house music makes him the perfect balance for Lee’s more intense musical sensibilities. “It is the music that drives our style. We always seem to agree on the beats that are heavy and intense. Heavy drums and bass. It is the music that drives everything,” he explains.
“We’re just in sync on everything, and there’s a lot to be said for that,” says Lee “whether we’re recording music or playing a show I’ll know what he’s going to play before he plays it. We’re more in sync than we know or are willing to admit and I think that comes out in the music.”
The group is not only remixing the electronic music with its tracks but with groundbreaking new technology as well. A key part of DJ Aero’s sound is his modular synthesizer which he built himself. “It’s the only one of its kind and I made it out of a bunch of parts I had, I even put a Tron arcade button on it,” says Aero joyfully, he clearly loves talking about his baby.
The duo can currently be seen on Deadmau5’s “Meowingtons Hax” tour making its way around the country. “The tour has been a fucking pleasure. Deadmau5 is a friend of mine and each place we’ve played has just been for the right people and the in the right places. All the places we’ve played everyone just loses their fucking minds which is amazing,” says Lee.
If you want to hear the genre-bending duo for yourself make sure to check out Deadmau5’s “Meowingtons Hax” tour as it makes its way through the Aragon Ballroom October 22 and 23.
