The art of burlesque has been around since the 17th Century. The tease eventually faded through the centuries as the more literal exposed performances became the norm. However, in recent years we have seen resurgence of the dance that can be both bawdy and provocative.

In Chicago there are several burlesque troops keeping the nostalgic spirit of burlesque alive. More recently, the trend has been to take a pop culture and parody it with the lure of the dance. The girls at Gorilla Tango Theatre have made it their mission to satisfy the desires of the geek in all of us. I’m sure Spielberg and Lucas had no idea how sexy their archeologist and his adventures to strange lands could be so damn naughty.
Temple of Boobs stars our fedora wearing, whip smacking, buxom hero, Indiana Jones (Sadie Hotkins) in search of fortune and glory. Yes you read buxom alright. Joining Indy is his (or her) faithful companion, the equally very cute and adorable Shortround (Bella Canto) and a brief appearance by nightclub performer, Willie Scott (Dakota Fanny). But who needs a love interest when the whole cast are insatiable women.
Many familiar with the second installment of the Indy franchise will be able to follow the basic premise. Our heroes are on a quest to find the sacred stones that have been stolen from a small village. A village who’s children is one by one being kidnapped and forced into slave labor. Okay now change sacred stones to a sacred statue (a vibrator to be precise) and then change children to hot scantily clad women (because children would be creepy). With that, you have everything you need to know for this naughty tale.
The girls of Gorilla Tango look like they are having a lot of fun playing these classic characters and even some non-human characters as well. Who needs props or set pieces when the girls can portray them so easily! I’ve never seen a map (Slightly Spitfire) look sexier as it’s slowly being unfolded or dangerous spikes look more tantalizing and tempting as portrayed by alluring beauties.
But that’s only the beginning, “Temple of Boobs” plays it’s cards nicely and is willing to drop them down slow. All burlesque show has only so many performers. All of them will make several appearances through the course of the evening. Meaning, you will see them strip down several times through the course of the show. Which is never a bad thing, but there’s something to be said for waiting and wanting more.
Director Stella Cheeks, in her directorial debut, has learned that the tease goes a long way. Our two main heroes keep their clothes on for almost the duration of the show. Letting the secondary characters showcase their naughtiness for most of the evening until the very end of the show. Indy finally shows off her ample bosoms two thirds of the way through the show (in a drug induced reveal) that is worth the wait. Anyone that is familiar with the tale will know when this moment occurs and will love the interpretation.
However, if you want to see Short Round in all her glory, you will have to be patient. Short Round is a complete tease and only reveals all her wonderful curves at the very end. With that said, it’s a tease that is worth waiting for and very well maybe the “fortune and glory” we have been looking to find all evening.
Gorilla Tango Theatre has taken burlesque to all new level with these enjoyable parodies of geek fancy. Do yourself a favor and head out this weekend to Western and Milwaukee and experience the fun and the excitement that only pop culture and a sexy tease can accomplish.
