Todd Barry is a veteran of the comedy business and has appeared on “Late Night with Conan O'Brien”, “The Late Show with David Letterman,” and Comedy Central. He has also appeared in films like “Road Trip” and “Pootie Tang.” I went to the 7 p.m. show at the Improv in Schaumburg on a Saturday night.

Before Todd took the stage, feature act Dan Kaufman warmed up the audience. Then Todd Barry came out. Barry is by no means a big star, and if you're not a stand-up comedian or a big fan of stand-up comedy you might not know who he is. As a stand-up comedian and fan of comedy I was very excited to see his act. I was not disappointed.

Todd Barry is not a highly energetic comedian like Pauly Shore or Dane Cook. His jokes are delivered primarily from one spot on stage in a dry sarcastic tone. It is a style that totally works for Barry.

His routines are clever and well timed. His banter with the audience was hilarious and kept the crowd involved with the show. He spent a lot of time making fun of the fact that he thought he was going to be performing in Chicago and was disappointed when he ended up in Schaumburg instead.

Barry then had special fun with one young girl who was brave enough to admit she is a student at The University of Phoenix Schaumburg Campus. Barry commented, “Is it called that because that's where you log in?” He then asked if anyone had been to New York and one woman yelled out “overrated!” This comment was all Barry needed to transition into a hilarious bit that went like this, “I asked a friend once if she'd ever been to New York and she said that she had passed through it once.”

Barry then did a hilarious impression of what the directions to his friend's destination must have been like, “Now I want you to drive 3 miles an hour through one of the biggest most congested cities in the world. But whatever you do don't stop…it's overrated.”

The end to an obviously already written bit was so clever it made you wonder if the woman in the audience was a plant. Todd Barry's act wasn't high energy, but his witty observations and dry sarcastic tone were impossible to resist.

Every time I have been to The Improv I have had a wonderful time. I as much as anyone knows how annoying it is to give up your parking spot and fight the traffic to get out to the suburbs. However, this is one trip that is well worth it. If you are in the mood for stand-up you won't find a better place in the Chicago area.
