“Are y’all ready for some shitty rap?” With this potentially prophetic statement, Libertyville, Ill., native MC Chris kicked off an entertaining and fun set at Wicker Park’s Double Door.

| | | Many may know Chris Ward as the writer and producer for several of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block, including "Sea Lab" and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force." However, Ward also writes and performs tongue-in-cheek rap and hip hop songs under the moniker MCChris. At the smoky Door, Chris mixed in a little self-deprecating humor to go with surprisingly funky beats and clever, sometimes nonsensical lyrics. “My back pack’s got jets, I’m Boba the Fett,” MC Chris raps on Fett Vet. “I bounty-hunt for Jabba the Hut to finance my vet.” Most of the songs appeal to the suburban slacker, as Ward talked a lot about growing up in Illinois. “Here’s to the geeks!” he cried out at one point. The set consisted of most of his material recorded as MChris, including “DQ Blizzard” and several songs I did not recognize. The highlight of the evening’s performance had to be Chris’s acapella rendition of “I Want Candy”. This delightfully strange little song was actually recorded for an episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, in which Chris plays the role of MC PPants, a giant diaper-wearing insane spider. Yes you read that right. PPants’ real motive is to drill a hole to the center of the Earth and let demons escape to run amok. Eventually he is tricked into walking into an explosive-laden abandoned warehouse by the Teens and all again is well with the world. While Ward spends a good deal of the show implying how much he stinks as a rapper. The reality is MC Chris sounds a little like Eminem only much less violent and potty-mouthed. On “Candy,” he speed dials through a series of rhymes with skill and precision that even Slim-Shady would have to give credit where it is due MC Chris understands his success and has a sense of humor about his rabid fans. After the show he took the time and welcomed the opportunity to talk to his fans. He even obliged a female fan by signing her left chest. I have never been more proud of my wife. |
