Say What with Josh Kelley Print E-mail

It gives me the utmost pleasure to promote a musician/actor/comedian if they are a good person. Josh Kelley, you know, the guy who same “Amazing”, is a good guy. A great guy, in fact.

Josh Kelley (opening for Joss Stone)
Sept. 13
Congress Theatre
2135 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Chicago, Ill.
Information: (773) 486-6672

Did you know?
• New album “Almost Honest” came out last month, his second album
• Toured with Dave Matthews
• Played college golf
• Used to mix Dave Matthews songs with Snoop Dogg lyrics to get attention at college concerts

He was more than willing to put up with my obnoxious behavior and humor me throughout our whole interview. He, ladies and gents, is a rock star.

One of my favorite characteristics about Josh’s music is that it is so heavily lyrically driven. If you are ever having difficulties in a relationship, I am sure Josh Kelley’s lyrics can provide some advice and release.

Josh, dude, you rock! Period!

If you haven’t bought Josh’s new album, “Almost Honest”, and haven’t bought tix to his show with Joss Stone, then get on the horn and take care of business. Go. Now. Buy that album and meet your very own Nick Powills at the show. If you are a beautiful girl, feel free to email me before hand, too. (Laughs) Word!

I am just walking around. We are heading to a Borders in store in a minute.

Is there an afternoon show?

We are going to do a five o’clock in-store. We have to do the three o’clock sound check, then the show, and then we are off to Seattle for another one. It’s crazy man. Our schedule is out-of-control.

How do you feel about doing all these Borders in-store performances?

It’s really important, man. I think if you really want to succeed in this business, you have to do all these grassroots stuff. You have to keep working to build your fan base.

OK, but honestly, do you really want to meet a girl in a bookstore? Wouldn’t you rather meet her backstage at a concert? You know, the special girls (laughs).

(Laughs) I would rather not meet a girl backstage. The weird thing, I was actually thinking about this the other day. You know, the girls you meet when you are on the road doing your shows and the girls you meet by accident. I don’t know. It’s just weird.

Well, you never know what the girl’s motives are when she is coming backstage to meet you.

Exactly. The girl I am seeing now, we are in the same sort of business, so it makes it a little easier. We have the same perspective on things. When you meet a girl who is already a fan and is already excited to meet you, it’s totally weird. There are some girls who you meet who are awesome on the road – but I would rather just bump into someone on the street. You know, at random.

I think it adds more to the story.

Probably so.

So, you have a girlfriend now. Is that tough?

Yeah, it’s really hard, man. It’s a lot harder than I would expect. But, she’s working hard, too. They are going to be filming for the next eight months, so, it’s OK. We are both working all the time and our careers are going up at the same time.

So, who’s the better musician, you or her?

Well, she’s actually an actress. She is a better actress and I am definitely a better musician than she is.

And, would I know this actress?

She was on my video, but she’s also on that show "Grey’s Anatomy." We met through her doing my video.

That’s awesome, man.

Yeah, man. It has worked out well.

Growing up in Georgia, did you ever think you would date a chick from Hollywood and be this famous?

You know, I really never thought about it, to tell you the truth. I am sure there were points where I thought, man, that girl is really hot, I need to meet a girl like that (laughs). I was always so hooked on music and sports. That was all I gave my mind time to think about. Obviously you are picking up magazines as a little kid and saying, ‘Oh my God, where are these girls?’ (Laughs) Where do they come from? Where are they?

But you played some college golf, so, I am sure you had plenty of ladies, and good ones, all over you, man.

Yeah, man. You know, golfers can get some hot chicks (laughs). And I like to paint.

Dude, you were never going to have a problem with the ladies, you were set.

I don’t know, man (laughs).

I’m telling you. A guy who can paint, play guitar, play sports, and sing to the women – you were set. It was locked up!

(Laughs) I don’t know.

Yeah, man. Guys need to take advice from you. No more drinking for Nick – just painting and guitar (laughs).

Oh, well, you know. I remember when I was in college, the whole reason why I wanted to write music was to pick up chicks. (Laughs).

But then, I just fell in love with the music. My friends would be like, ‘Let’s go out and get wasted.’ And I would be like, ‘No, man, I have to finish this track.’ (Laughs) I would just stay in and finish songs.

Hey, it made you the big bucks. And now you’re a (bleepin’) rock star.

(Laughs) (Bleep) How did that happen (laughs)?

Now, you are no longer single, what do you do with all the hotties who come up to you?

Man, I have a great band.

(Laughs) Pass them on to them.

No, no. We are not looking for a good (bleep). We are just looking to hang. I don’t know how rock ‘n roll used to be, but now, it’s not as crazy, man. I know people used to not live as long in this industry, you know, but a lot of guys on the road have girlfriends. And, I’m in a new relationship that I definitely don’t want to mess up this time, cause I have messed them up before.

When you are in Chicago, I think you should bring me backstage and I will be the sixth man in the group. Just pass the girls my way and I will make sure they are taken care of.

(Laughs) Let me tell you, come backstage bro and I will make sure you are well taken care of.

Dude, I am totally there. I am always up for having a new famous friend. (Laughs)

Who’s a name dropper? This guy.

(Laughs) Ok, we can be friends.
