First off, congratulations on the VMA. How did that feel?
How's that feel? It feels crazy. It almost feels like someone's gonna pull out the reality TV cameras and it's all been a big joke.
You've had Sugar We're Goin' Down reach #1 on MTV's TRL. Do you think that teenagers make up the largest part of your fan base?
It's hard to say. They're definitely a vocal sub-group of the fan base. But I see a lot of thirty-year olds who see where we're coming from. You know and just as many twenty-some odd year old hardcore kids. It's all over the place so it's hard to say.
Speaking of the hardcore scene, you guys came out of the Chicago hardcore scene. You're coming back to Chicago later this month, how does it feel to be headlining this time?
It feels great. It's one of those things you can't really prepare for. I mean, we've been preparing for three or four years, not preparing on purpose, but technically preparing to play something like Aragon and it's still going to be crazy. It's still something we're nervous about, because I mean, it's the Aragon.
Are you excited to play in front of your hometown fans?
Yeah, it's silly you know. Chicago's where I'm from, it's my home town and it's got a lot to do with me. There's a lot more at stake there I suppose.
You're with Island records now. Do you like working with a bigger label now?
It's definitely different but it's weird how similar they are. The only difference is money. Everything's on a bigger scale so there's a lot more at stake if you make a bad record. The people are still…no matter what label it is there's plenty of indie's that you can find here that would treat you a lot worse than a major. It's not like it used to be where you're just a faceless name in a crowd somewhere. You do matter to these people. I'm pleased with the decision we made regarding Island. I think I trust those people, I respect those people, it's not totally ridiculous.
Last time you were in the studio you had 25 songs that could have made it onto the new album. Any plans for those songs?
We're still working on this one, still touring on this one and this one's still very much alive. We're still feeling it and still excited about this album and still happy to play these songs. I think a lot of those songs just weren't good enough to make it to the record anyway. We just finished the video for, “Dance, Dance”. I'm excited about that song, I'm just happy where we are. If anything else happens it's all been wonderful. We're all lucky.
You've been on tour for the whole summer already with the “Van's Warped Tour” and you'll be touring through November, right?
Yeah, yeah, we tour a lot.
Do you like being on the road?
Yeah, we're used to it so it's okay. It'd be one thing if we were new to it. But we've been doing it so long and it's been so gradual to get to where we are now it doesn't feel like anything crazy. Touring is what we do best as a band. We're better at touring than we are at anything.
So you'd rather be on tour than in the studio?
Well, I think as a band, yeah. I love the studio personally but I know not everyone in my band does.
How does the creative process for the band work then? You do vocals and play guitar but then Pete does the lyrics.
Basically the way we work it out is he'll write words he'll give them to me in big installments and I'll kind of come up with a song based on his words. Kind of how Elton John and Bernie Taupin work you know.
(I laugh, he laughs)
Nah, I'm kidding. But we'll work out something like that and I'll take it to the band. We just kind of feel it out as a band and everybody puts their little spin on it and turns it into a Fall Out Boy song.
Do you feel the lyrics hold a lot of meaning for the whole band and not just you and Pete?
Well, yeah. Obviously it's autobiographical Pete stuff but we know Pete well enough to know what he's talking about. It's not like we have to conjure up some sort of fake images for it or fake passion for it. We were there so we know what he's talking about. It's fairly easy for us to play those songs and know where he's coming from lyrically. It's totally easy for me to sing those songs and sing it with inflection and know what I'm saying.
I wanted to ask you, are you big movie buffs? Because I see references in your songs, “Of All the Gin Joints…,” and, “Nobody Puts Baby In the Corner.”
Yeah absolutely, I love movies. And if anything, that was one of the early common grounds we had more than music. That's one of the reasons we're a band is a lot of the movies we had in common.
Really?
Yeah, if it weren't for, like, “Rushmore” and “Back to the Future” and the Karate Kid movies… I don't think we'd be a band.
You've got so many movie influences. Who are some of your musical influences?
We're kind of all over the place. I know at any given point whatever any one of us will be listening to at least two other guys will hate it. Our guitar player likes the Smiths, Pete likes younger bands, he's got his ear to the ground. Andy, our drummer, likes underground hip-hop and metal. I'm really into 70's soul and Jazz and R&B.
So what's in the future for Fall Out Boy?
I don't know. We'll just keep playing keep being Fall Out Boy. It's crazy enough, so we're just stoked.
And the name? You happy with your name?
Well, I mean. Here's the thing, nobody likes their name. I mean, my middle name's Mark, and I'm not stoked on that name either.
(I laugh)
You know, that's just a name. Fall Out Boy's just Fall Out Boy.
Right, just something to call you.
We are what we are and there's nothing we can do about it. I'm happy to be…at the end of the day, if I had a choice between a band with a better name and being in Fall Out Boy I'd probably pick Fall Out Boy because I'm very excited about being in it right now.
Well congratulations on all the success so far and I hope it continues and see you in Chicago later this month.
Awesome, man. I'll see you later.
