Fun rules at Cherry Red Print E-mail

As an establishment equal parts dance club and lounge, Cherry Red stands out among the Irish pubs and college bars that dominate nightlife in northern Lincoln Park. Visible from the outside by its double cherry logo, the nightclub draws in partygoers looking to add a little class and variety to their weekend.

Atmosphere

It's all about design at Cherry Red- from the long red couches set up on platforms near the bar to the sunken dance floor surrounded by maroon-colored pillars- everything is designed to give off the feel of a VIP lounge. The low lighting and the signs tacked up to section off private parties all adds to the exclusive feel, as does the entire color scheme of the club, which is reminiscent of velvet ropes and Hollywood carpets. Only in this bar, there is no actual separation- everyone who enters is automatically a very important person.

CROWD

The patrons of Cherry Red are varied- from the trendy private party loungers who stretch out on the red couches to the Lincoln Park residents who come to dance into the morning in the large, crowded space around the DJ stand. Trendy is key, however, and the owners of Cherry Red even stress this on their website with the words, “Appropriate attire is strongly suggested.” Laid-back and sneaker-wearing these drinkers are not, but they are still determined to have a good time.

ENTERTAINMENT / EVENTS

One thing Cherry Red is known for is its private parties, which can host anywhere between 10 and 1000 people. It is possible for any celebratory group to rent out a table, a room, or even the entire club for a night. This package is $30 per person, which gets everyone a wristband at the door and free access to the premium open bar from 9pm-12am. The club also hosts nights such as “Speed Saturdays” and “Flavor Fridays” which feature a $5 cover charge and weekly DJ's that play hip-hop, techno, house and rock music.

SPIRITS

The bars of Cherry Red feature premium drinks, and many different variations of vodka, rum, gin, tequila, whisky, bourbon and champagne. Some upscale choices range from Cristal to Don Perignon, but the drink of choice for the club is Red Bull and Vodka, which is sold as a special for $5 on Saturday night.

PRICES

There is a cover to get into Cherry Red on weekend nights, and oftentimes the $30 wristbands can be sold at the door even to those who haven't been invited to a private party (to get this deal it helps to be friendly to the bouncers). Drink prices are about average, normally ranging from $5 to $10 for a premium mixed drink.

WHY IT'S UNIQUE

It would be easy to judge a club that looks like Cherry Red as a snobby establishment that divides its clientele between VIP and everyone else. But the staff of the club, ranging from the bouncers to the bartenders, is all extremely friendly, sociable and fun. Although in the early hours of the evening the club can seem a little uptight, by midnight it's rocking out to the latest hip-hop hits and nearly everyone gets on the dance floor. Don't be fooled by the trendy look of this club, because by the time the alcohol starts flowing fun is the only thing on everyone's agenda.
