Quimby’s Bookstore hangs on when the corporate chains have swallowed up so many other independent bookstores. You say Chicago’s known for its first-class art and literature culture? Well, here’s where you can experience it firsthand.

Quimby’s Bookstore
1854 W. North Ave.
Chicago, IL 60622
(773) 342-0910
Hours: Noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday
11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday

Noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Nestled quietly in Bucktown, Quimby’s neighbors include trendy shops, cafes, and even Cheetah Gym down the road. It can be easy to miss, but a sign hangs out front to help guide you home. Don’t forget to leave your cell phone off though. People are trying to read.

Inside, you’ll find a wide variety of books, local zines, magazines, and graphic novels you won’t find in your local Barnes & Noble. There’s something to please the inner rebel, deviant, or pseudo-intellectual snob in us all. Art, alternate lifestyles, politics, comic books, fiction, biographies, sex, drugs, and, of course, rock ‘n’ roll. They’ve even got a fair selection of erotica. And if you’re curious, you’ve no reason to be shy. No one’s going to judge you. Odds are everyone else will leaf through something equally provocative before leaving the store.

And don’t forget the curios you can buy: Videos, DVD’s, CD’s, posters, postcards, journals, stationary, magnets, dolls, and toys, and much more. Quimby’s might be small (though not quaint), but you can easily waste hours away just glancing through everything. Don’t worry. They won’t throw you out unless it’s closing.

You’re likely to run into the tattoo and piercing crowd, art students, or anyone who likes traveling off the beaten path. It’s also a great place for writers to find a place submit their short stories or articles to while honing their craft. It’s a bookstore though, so you might see just about anyone come wandering in or biking past outside.

Quimby’s also hosts a number of signings, readings, question & answer sessions with writers, editors, and other notable people of the literary or musical persuasion. Do you want to host an event at Quimby’s? Go to their web site and look at their guidelines. Just remember no open-mic poetry. They’re serious about that.

The drawbacks are that parking can be hard to find and this isn’t where to find all the latest bestsellers. However, if you have a niche, hobby, or alternative lifestyle, this is the place to read up on it.

Swing by on a sleepy afternoon. It’s rarely crowded and if browsing through the titles makes you drowsy, kick back on the old couch at the back of the store.
