Suburban rock venues are quickly and sadly becoming a thing of the past. Sure, there are some nice hole-in-the-wall venue types that are around and still doing quite well. But when you want to see your favorite bands, you usually have to take the train or shell out 15 bucks for parking to go see shows in city.

It's not that there haven't been remarkable shows played in high school gymnasiums, AFW Rec. Halls, church basements and the like. Nevertheless, it warms the heart of a seasoned veteran show-attendee like myself to see a suburban vintage theater restored into a thriving music venue.

ATMOSPHERE

The stage is uncharacteristically high for such a small venue, but it lends way to great sound coming off of the stage. For those over 21, the bar is located on the top level with a lounge area to oversee the crowd and have a good view of the stage.

CROWD

Since the venue caters to both hardcore/punk bands and bluesmen alike, the crowds are generally different on a night-to-night basis. If you are there on a Tuesday night you are more liable to be dodging flailing arms in the mosh pit than you would hearing more soothing sounds from reggae acts on a Thursday evening.

ENTERTAINMENT AND EVENTS

The Clearwater Theater is open Monday thru Saturday. Shows are all ages unless officially denoted 21 or over. Also featured are karaoke, poetry, and open bar nights. Clearwater is also available to rent for private parties.

PRICES

Show prices range anywhere from $3 to $15 cover.

WHY IT'S UNIQUE

The Clearwater Theater has done the service of helping local acts make names for themselves in the suburban Chicago area.
