For quite some time now I have been astounded by literary works, theatrical performances and films about France, Paris and the French-lifestyle. Things couldn’t be grander: strolls by the Seine, romantic picnics under the Tour Eiffel, fresh baguettes and delicious wine from marketplaces. In a city of lights, there is so much romance. But then again…just outside of Paris is Euro Disney.

Long before Euro Disney moved in, George Feydeau wrote a play called “A Flea in Her Ear,” and it is own way, it is a combination of the grandeur of Paris and the playfulness of a theme park.In brief: There are speech impediments, impotence, sexual harassment, physical abuse, adultery and ethnic stereotypes. But they are French, so it is far more tolerable and much funnier than if an American playwright had attempted the same thing.
Briefly, Raymonde Chandebise believes her husband, Victor Emmanuel, is having an affair because the Hotel Coq d’Or mailed her husband’s suspenders back to him. And what would a hotel named Coq d’Or be doing with her husband’s suspenders if he wasn’t having an affair? As a result, she comes up with a crazy scheme to catch her husband in the act that pulls her closest friend into the mix making her the number one accomplice.
The Rep’s portrayal of “A Flea in Her Ear” is comical; a constant cat-and-mouse chase on stage; and a case of what could go wrong will go wrong.
When I was in Paris, I was given the choice to visit the Palace of Versailles or Euro Disney, and without hesitation, I chose the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles over Space Mountain at Euro Disney. Perhaps, snobbishly, this says something of my personality and taste in culture, and by default, my review of “A Flea in Her Ear.” Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
