These favorites included "Even Flow," "Jeremy," "Animal" and a crowd favorite "Better Man." Songs from their new album tended to be more on the political side than previous albums but still had that signature Pearl Jam rock feel such as set opener “Life Wasted” and “World Wide Suicide.”
While the set did not include concert norms like flashy lights, video screens or any other extras, the crowd was instead treated to an amazing performance by the band, especially Vedder. His energy levels remained high from the first cords to the last of the three song encore. Vedder was certainly is comfortable these days in his role as the group's front man and is a true entertainer.
After Pearl Jams' high energy set, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' set seemed more relaxed but had the same crowd buzz. The band proved that even after 30 years of playing together, they may look older but they still know how to rock and roll. Unlike Pearl Jam, the group did incorporate the use of flashing lights and eight neon projection screens into the group's performance but that's what a headliner is suppose to do right?
The group's set list was a Petty fans dream come true and played out almost like a greatest hits album. Petty belted out crowd favorites such as "I Won't Back Down," "Last Dance with Mary Jane," "Free Fallin'" and "You Wreck Me". During the concert, Petty also announced he has a forthcoming solo project called “Highway Companion” and played a new tune from it called “Saving Grace.”
In between tunes, Petty talked to the crowd and seemed to genuinely enjoy playing for the crowd. He also appeared to be very humble during the whole set and appreciated the fact that everyone was cheering and clapping after each of his songs.
Prior to attending the concert, many fans were unsure if Pearl Jam and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were a good match to tour together. But after seeing both groups rock the crowd separately and together, the audience embraced the pairing. The two groups also seemed to complement each other nicely. Of course the highlight was when Vedder came out towards the end of the set to join the Heartbreakers on the Classic Rock hit, “American Girl.” Pearl Jam along with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers definitely got Summerfest started on a high note.
