The recently re-mastered first four releases (“Run-D.M.C.,” “King of Rock,” “Raising Hell” and “Tougher Than Leather”) from Run-D.M.C. dropped recently in September 2005, making way for Rev Run’s fist solo album, “Distortion.”

“Run-D.M.C.”

“King of Rock”

“Raising Hell”

“Tougher Than Leather”

It was only a matter of time for these four masters to be re-released following the tragic murder of Run-DMC founding member Jam Master Jay on October 30, 2002.

These new collections include multiple bonus tracks that include demos, live performances, B sides, and of all things a Penthouse ad (Tougher Than Leather). Each of the releases has extended liner notes and photos that will take you back.

Run-D.M.C. took hip-hop from basements and clubs to the charts with their rap and rock vision of the future, and even had a hand in re-vitalizing Aerosmith’s career with their spin on the classic “Walk This Way” (“Raising Hell”). They took the mainstream by storm by being the first rap act to perform on “Saturday Night Live,” “American Bandstand” and “Live Aid” … not bad for three guys from Hollis, Queens.

Run-D.M.C. brought new school from old school hip-hop. The group continued in the tradition that Kurtis Blow, Whodini, Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five, UTFO, and the Sugar Hill Gang in setting down lyrical rhymes to break beats and samples. Run-DMC’s paved the way for new rappers like Eminem, 50 Cent and even Kid Rock.

Run-D.M.C.’s music did and still depicts what happens in the hood and has influenced hardcore rappers like Ice T, N.W.A. and Public Enemy. But they have also embraced the comical lyrics of old school rap with songs like “You Talk to Much” (“King of Rock”), “You be illin” (“Raising Hell”) and “Mary Mary.” (“Tougher Than Leather”) that has influenced groups like D.J. Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, The Beastie Boys and Kid ’n Play.

History will remember them as the ones who came to bring the game to the mainstream. These days much love is given to these pioneers of the phrase and beats. So grab your bling, sport your Adidas and raise hell for the kings of rock.
