I was handed the new Death Cab for Cutie CD and immediately I popped it in. From first listen it’s like wearing my favorite jeans and that big comfy sweater - it just feels good. I have to admit, I am not a huge fan and I in no way profess to know all the inner workings or motivations, etc. of the band. I do, however, know a good album when I hear it and this one does not disappoint.

“Plans”
(Atlantic / Wea)
Released August 30, 2005
It is different enough from their previous two albums that it doesn’t feel like they are repeating themselves but is still reminiscent of their style.  Although “Brothers on a Hotel Bed” could easily have been on “Transatlantacism,” several of the other new songs have cooler or perhaps a more blasé lyrical direction. This time around singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard seems to have find a more accepting or unmoving attitude on this album than in past efforts. Almost like he’s finally done hurting and has learned to move on.

Still, you’ll hear Gibbard’s classic, clever word play in songs like “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.” The songs in general on “Plans” are a mixture of heavy chords and light rhythmical overtones. Creating a smooth yet sometimes mellow sound with random bursts of catchy choruses that Death Cab has always been known to deliver. A almost schizophrenic album that is part head-bopper and another part relaxing reflecting vibe.

Music for me isn’t just about catchy lyrics or a good beat- it’s got to have the whole package- lyrics, music, feeling- so that it affects you. Death Cab has always been good at pouring all of themselves into every song. Where you once could feel the disdain and anger like on their 2001 release, “The Photo Album”, “Plans”  has a kind of everything-is-going-to-be-ok feeling throughout most of the album. So give the album a listen and maybe you too will see the fog begin to clear even if it’s only for a brief moment.
