With the White Sox up one game to none, the Astros took a commanding 4-2 lead in the fifth inning Sunday night. But then, in the bottom of the seventh, the White Sox got just a bit more of that luck that has followed them all post-season. On what appeared to be a foul tip, the home plate umpire ruled that a pitch hit White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye. Dye was awarded first base, and on the first pitch, the next batter, first baseman Paul Konerko hit the 17th grand slam in major league history. But that's not even half the drama! In the top of the 9th inning, now down 6-4, the Astros got a two-out single to tie the game at 6, off White Sox ace reliever Bobby Jenks. Then, the White Sox answered back in the most unlikely way in the bottom of the 9th. Left fielder Scott Podsednik took Astros closer Brad Lidge over the left-center field wall. Yes, this is the same Podsednik who had no home runs in more than 500 at-bats in the regular season. And while he hit one against Boston in the Divisional series a few weeks ago, this was undoubtedly the biggest hit in his career. The White Sox mobbed Podsednik at home plate, and the Sox won 7-6 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the World Series. Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
