With no sign above the entrance or bright lights announcing its presence at 1444 West Chicago Avenue, Sonotheque might be the place you’re searching for but never knew existed.  Its distinctive metallic façade located among the uniform buildings lining the block definitely calls for attention, but reveals little about the place hiding behind the doorway.

Sonotheque
1444 W. Chicago Ave.
Chicago, Ill.

Hours: 7 p.m.to 2 a.m. Sundays through Fridays; 7 p.m.to 3 a.m. Saturdays

Step inside and you’ll find a nightclub found on the objective to create a venue merging unparallel musical experience with sophistication of a downtown lounge.

ATMOSPHERE

Sonotheque might be best known for its music but it’s the innovative interior that really creates its atmosphere.  Futuristic rather than modern, with a spaceship feel to it, Sonotheque features smooth metallic surfaces, curved walls, uber -modern furniture and creative lightning solutions. The inside layout of Sonotheque was designed after a careful study of acoustics which means that form still follows function in this nightclub – a concept evident in the state of the art DJ booth and stylish yet somewhat clinical décor provided by the British architect and designer Suhail.

Low sofas invite sitting down and relaxing making Sonotheque into a lounge, while a specious interior allows for dancing on less busy nights.

MUSIC

Considering that “sound” served as inspiration guiding all aspects of this nightclub’s design, Sonotheque’s continuous dedication to providing top- notch musical experience shouldn’t come as a surprise.  This acoustically-evolved venue hosts some of the best local and international DJs who spin everything from jazz and hip-hop to obscure vintage and ethnic tunes.

CROWD

Sonotheque may seem a little bit cliquish at times but that’s only because the place is still relatively new and unknown to many Chicagoans.  Many of the regulars are either local East Village residents or DJ-generated music enthusiasts who can count on Sonotheque in delivering quality entertainment.  The clientele is fashion-forward but more in the avant-garde than cookie-cutter way.  Retro-inspired getup is more of a norm among the patrons than mainstream styles you may observe in the majority of the city’s nightclubs.

SPIRITS

As any other respectable lounge in the city, Sonotheque offers a wide variety of liquors including, wines, beers, and specialty drinks. A good thing is that Sonotheque’s upscale feel is fortunately not reflected in its liquor prices and it’s possible to get a nice drink for around $5.

PRICES

Some nights are free, some require cover charge depending on the event. A $1 coat check is also available.

WHY IT’S UNIQUE

There are only few places in the city that can be considered a ‘total package’ and Sonotheque is one of them.  With its combination of great music, visually-stimulating environment and excellent drinks, Sonotheque has all the prerequisites to become one of the favorite after-hour places, not only among the locals and those familiar with the Chicago’s DJ scene, but all those looking for a world-class nightclub experience.
