When it was determined this issue of Lumino would focus on the poker phenomenon, a travel article on Vegas seemed only natural – except I’ve never been to Vegas. Frankly, I don’t understand the people who repeatedly spend their vacations on The Strip.
Don’t get me wrong, Las Vegas is on my list of places to see, it’s just not that high up. However, I am an open-minded person, and in the last few weeks I talked to all kinds of people in search of an answer to the question, “Why Vegas?” What I discovered is that, from the beautiful people to the extravagant food, the around-the-world hotel themes to the world’s largest strip club, the rationale behind frequent flights to Sin City can be divided into a few personalities …
Obviously there is The Gambler. Those who fall into this category venture to Vegas to lay it all on the line. They find enjoyment in risking a lot to gain even more, and what better place to do it? I can’t really argue with that logic, but for a girl who hasn’t bought a single lottery ticket in the four and a half years I’ve legally been able to, I will never understand it.
Rich People. To those who can stay in the luxurious hotels, eat the exquisite cuisine, spend a day at the spa, throw down money at the casino and still afford to leave a tip for their bartender after sipping martinis all night – I hate you. No, seriously, if I had that kind of money, I would probably take a nice long trip to Vegas, too. And then I’d go to New York, and Thailand, and New Orleans, and Greece, and New Zealand and any number of other places. Why spend all that money in one place? Expand your horizons!
Then there is the Cheap Traveler. These are the people who want to see the world, and find they can go from Egypt to Paris to New York and back by simply exploring hotels along The Strip. I can relate to this personality, as the extravagantly themed hotels are one of the reasons I eventually want to visit Vegas. I agree the concept of actual canals and gondola rides inside of a hotel is pretty damn sweet, but I maintain that it doesn’t take the place of actually going to Venice. Money is a factor, I realize this – most people don’t have the funds to fly to Italy and in that case, rock on with the Vegas version. However, a lot of people probably don’t realize that if they can afford several trips to Vegas, they can afford to fly to Europe. Go during the off-season and a flight from Chicago to London can be in the $400 range.
Finally, we have the Perpetual Partiers. One of the best explanations anyone gave me is that, if you want to go party like Paris Hilton, Vegas is the place to do it. You’re guaranteed to meet new, youthful, attractive people, equally eager to down a few drinks and then get down on the dance floor. You don’t worry about what time it is. You don’t sleep. You just have fun – it’s like an adult Disney World. Thankfully for this personality, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Supposedly anyway, but I don’t know if I believe that one.
