If I were to choose the soundtrack for my adult life thus far it would be “whitechocolatespaceegg” by Liz Phair. You see, I want to be cool, tall, vulnerable, and luscious too. Or maybe I just like the idea of being a little more like Liz. While bordering on uber-fan, I had never seen her in concert, until Oct. 25 at the Vic Theater.

She arrived on stage (after an enjoyable and CD purchase inspiring performance by the pop chamber quartet Matt Pond) in her World Series bomber jacket and a shout out to her hometown.

Liz played a few acoustic songs with an accompanying guitarist. Her first was the new single “Everything to Me” which seemed more honest, less pop-y with the acoustic strip down.

A Sox update later, the full band joined Phair onstage. The playlist highlighted the classic Liz Phair sound with favorites from “Exile in Guyville” and “whitechocolatespaceegg” as well as a few from her recent releases that she rocked out more than on the CDs.

Mid-set she performed what she said was a “special request” of “Little Digger” because she missed her son and then went straight into crowd (and reviewer) pleasing “Polyester Bride.” She wrapped the show with an X-rated encore,  including a solo performance of “Chopsticks.”

Admittedly, Phair looked stiff at the mic and the “jamming” with the band was a little canned and predictable. There was a flub during “Extraordinary” and yes, the acoustics in my shower are better than those at the Vic.

But, overall, it was a solid show by Phair, who is still a rocker at heart - despite her constant rotation on The Mix. I hope one day there will be a live album as my soundtrack for more cool, vulnerable, luscious years. (I’ve given up on tall.)
