Howlin’ piano bar rocks Chicago Print E-mail

The first time I ventured into the city to check out Howl at the Moon, I was instantly blown away with the amount of entertainment this little piano bar could offer.

With dueling pianos jamming out "Piano Man" the minute I walked through the door, I knew I was in for a special night.

After losing my piano-bar virginity, I was completely sold. I was drawn not only by the tasty selection of top-of-the-line booze, but also the talent of the musicians who were performing on stage. I had never seen anything like this. Now, I have experienced Howl at the Moon three times, and that says something. I expect to go many, many more times.

There are several rotating musicians on stage on any given night. Two are guaranteed to play the piano and bellow out lyrics to the crowd’s favorite songs, while there are a few others who add the background tunes. These musicians are not like the typical bar/club musicians, they are actually good. In fact, they are great. Until I had a few too many martinis, I could truly offer my respect to their top-notch performances.

On one particular visit to Howl at the Moon, as my friend and I down our fifth chocolate martini (I know, I’m a woman), the entertainment began to get even wackier than before. One of the pianists got up from the piano and began to teach the crowd the motions of "Joy to the World." Just pause for a second and imagine a room of a 100 or so drunk patrons singing and doing hand signals (balls = the lyric boys, and boobs = the lyric to girls) to "Joy to the World." Did you get that image in your head? Good. But you won’t get as much of a kick out of this unless you witness it first-hand. Trust me, you are in for a laugh of a lifetime if you experience this act – which is one of a million – at Howl at the Moon.

The only real complaint I have about Howl at the Moon is that prices are high. I built up a bar tab of over $80 each time I visited. However, when downtown, you shouldn’t expect to pay much less anywhere. And, you are paying for the entertainment, so it all weighs out in the end.

Howl at the Moon is definitely a great place to impress out-of-towners, or even Chicago-area folks if they haven’t been to this great downtown venue.
