Chances are you own a bright yellow rubber wristband that’s imprinted with “LIVESTRONG” across the top. Or if you don’t, you probably know at least 10 other people who do. More than 20 million of these puppies have been sold, and it’s all thanks to accomplished cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong.
In just six months, wristband sales have raised close to $23 million for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The money will be used support LAF’s cancer education, advocacy, public health, and research programs. LAF (www.laf.org) and partner Nike’s “WearYELLOW LiveSTRONG” campaign (www.wearyellow.com) sells approximately 150,000 wristbands each day. Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer at age 25, in 1996, just as his cycling career was starting to take off. He overcame daunting odds of survival and went on to win six consecutive Tour de France titles starting in 1999. After the last Tour de France victory in 2004, rumors flew of engagement between him and current girlfriend Sheryl Crow, but we have yet to see a ring on her finger. Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
