Rosebud not your grandmother's movie theater Print E-mail

Even though it’s a rarity for my personal tastes to take me out of my comfortable confines from Milwaukee’s downtown or East side establishments, there is one reason for a drive west to the only movie theater worthy of paying higher prices to take in a movie.

Rosebud Cinema Drafthouse
6823 W. North Ave.
Milwaukee, Wis.

The Rosebud Cinema Drafthouse fulfills the desires for a beer during a movie, or even more than a tub of popcorn.

Located in the quaint surroundings of Wauwatosa, the Rosebud is easily accessed right on North Avenue just a short drive East from Mayfair Mall. The location is not far from the Wauwatosa Village where the homes and shops are often visited to check out the artistry of their architecture and unique decor. Wauwatosa is also a perfect spot for finding eateries off the beaten path. Yet, despite all that Wauwatosa has to offer, its greatest gift to visitors has to be the North Avenue icon, The Rosebud.

Built in 1931, the Rosebud has outlasted so many of the North Avenue passing fancies. After gaining landmark status, it was purchased and renovated in 1999 to be the great attraction it is today. First and foremost, it is necessary to understand why an independent theater stays afloat. The answer is simple. Most independent theaters fold due to not providing first-run films. When indie theaters do run the bit hit of the summer (so to say), the film has become a thing of the past. The Rosebud has always found a way to bring first-run films (as opposed to just ‘movies’) to the moviegoers, which is reason one to make it out.

I know what you’re thinking though: First-run films equal high-priced films. Well, it’s not to say that it is a budget cinema, but the Rosebud offers more than just history and ambiance than you’d imagine. For the same price you’d pay at the local megaplex, you can relax in your choice of plush velvet couches or café style tables with chairs. In the true spirit of comfort, those couches, love seats and chairs are always encouraged by management to be positioned for your ultimate comfort.

Just when you thought the best in film viewing is upon you, a wait staff will come to your area to take your order. Yes, the Rosebud also offers an array of delicious appetizers as well as pizzas or hamburgers in addition to the standard popcorn or pretzels usually found at a movieplex. The food is made to order and served right to your comfy seat while you’re taking in the film.

This is not even the end of the sale, though. While watching your movie, after having eaten a full meal and chasing it with a draft beer in a pint glass you can purchase to take home with you (bottled beer also available), you can order up a delectable piece of Rosebud New York Cheesecake or a fudge brownie with a scoop of ice cream. Wow, a film, food and draft experience in comfort.
